Intel Haswell 4670k + 4770K Overclocking guide

let me know what works best for you guys in order to find ring bus stablity

 

a- starting with max voltages , find ring stability, then lower voltages

 

b- starting with more conservative voltages  (vrin and piv) and working your way up until you hit max voltages.

I think working up the way is more suitable as it'll take a lot less time. If voltage is set high then it'll take more time to get down to instability and more of as temptation to take bigger jumps. By increasing as you go fail's will reduce time to test and give you an idea where it's heading.

update

i set

VCCIN -2.2V

ring voltage - 1.4V

 

on 1-1 i keep get blue screen

on 43,42,41,40 even 39...

 

back to auto Settings on ring voltage

and VCCIN on 2v

What do you suggest? I run two hours testing everything again been stable.
This has been a TEST 8 hours.
ring voltage drops the OC ....

Try This

 

VCCIN - 2.1V

 

ring voltage 1.4V

 

I think you basically determined you are not going to be able to run a 1:1 ring ratio at 4.4GHz.

 

start at 43x and work your way down. 42x,41x,

 

PIV is a bit tricky thats why im having you try different values

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your result!

All of your settings look fairly good . I dont know too much about asus bios but looks like you have things set up fairly good.

I think IBT is overvolting your cpu. Does it jump to 1.36V if you set your cpu to manual mode?

For most synthetic stress tests you need to set your cpu to manual mode to maintain the voltage you have selected .

XTU does NOT overvolt the cpu when stress testing.

run the xtu stress test and see if the overvolting to 1.36V continues

 

Given your resuts I would settle for 4.6GHz with the 4500MHz ring bus and mem chips at 2400MHz. Seems to be your sweet spot. You will most likely need a significant voltage increase to get 4.7GHz stable on all cores (1.4-1.5V).

 

If you do decide to push the cpu further just find the highest frequency you can run your ram at with tighter timings.

example: 1866MHz 9-9-9-24 1T

 

You will always benefit more from a higher cpu clock than high mem speeds,but honestly I think you have a very well balanced OC at these settings

PIV 1.9

4.6GHz CPU @ 1.33V

4.5GHz ring bus @ 1.33V

2400MHz mem chips cl 10

 

I would stay away from the per\core overclocking. from my testing I score lower on every benchmark I run if I start messing with individual core frequencies. Might just be a flaw of my board. run some cinebench at 4.8\4.7 and see if it scores higher\lower than all cores at 4.7

Funny thing that you say per core overclocking does not seem to make a big difference / might seem slower. Same idea I got earlier when using 49-48-47-46, slower on IBT and does not seem any different otherwise. Maybe that's somewhere hidden in my UEFI still to correct, but my cpu does not like to run 49 single core enabled anyway, so I just left that.

48x needs too much voltage / too high temps, 47x I think I am around 1.375v but not entirely stable yet when including the RAM. 

For me it looks similar to your results tbh. 46x 1:1 ratio is a bit annoying to get to and probably not worth the trouble. Have the feeling my cpu does not like more than 45x for the power I am willing to feed it. That's the same for 47x core, also using 45x cache there...

 

I guess you're right, might try using 2133 RAM @ 9-11-11-28 (as per Mushkin website for the 17000 version of my RAM) with 47x core and 45x cache.

If I get that stable I just bench both versions and select the faster one ;) - 47x does sound nicer hehe (or 50x... derp)

 

Regarding the Asus UEFI, ya, still gotta figure out a lot of things, but mainly the (practical) difference bet Fully Manual mode and Manual/Auto sth - using cpu internal management or digi+ management. pfff... :)

Almost forgot, yes something is overvolting a little. But that might be the board / LLC, auto whatever. I find I can change things in AI suite and it has an effect, I think..., but sometimes changing things in IETU does not have any effect. I go mostly via UEFI anyway. Probably related to this degree of manual mode stuff from Asus... tbc

Double Post, oops :D

 

So, I did some more fine-tuning of the UEFI (oO) and read a bit more....

Now, I changed in the Asus UEFI to Fully Manual, set the volts (they say the board does not use LLC that way, no vdroop, just what you set.....).

And some few other things, disabled iGPU, yadda yadda.

 

The main thing - I think, correct me otherwise, Intel n00b speaking - was to change the CPU System Agent Voltage (VCCSA). It was on auto at some 0.82 / 0.85 (something like that lol).

Read about it, default is supposed to be 0.925v (I think). So, I manually set that there, and that seems good now... :D Btw, didn't touch Analog / Digital I/O at all, are on auto, rest pretty much auto.

[Maybe it was also the setting Internal PLL Overvoltage to enabled...]

 

I am just running IETU while writing this, 47x core @ 1.35v core UEFI (shows as 1.376 in AI Suite III and CPU-Z ?!?!?!?!?), 45x Ring @ 1.3v, 2400 RAM @ 10-12-12-31-1T, max 84degC core 1, avg max 78degC, avg about 70degC.

If this is stable, I consider my tuning job finally done :)

I won't run IBT afterwards and just hope for the best lol.

 

Still, no clue where the extra 0.025v on the core come from. Maybe still CPU LLC, sth else. Any Asus Guru is welcome to comment ;)

 

EDIT:

- Still testing, even got some more room for lowering vcore (1.3375v now and running). Anyone can confirm that 0.925v VCCSA is ok and good to use, please?

- I am stable with 4.7GHz as mentioned above, but only with this stress I do have the temps low enough to be ok. If I run IBT / AIDA64 / prime95 it does get to hot and maybe even crash.

  Is there anything, including rendering, heavy calculations that would be the equivalent load to those high-stress tests??

  Should I worry about that the CPU is running too hot and not necessarily stable with those?

 I think thats a very good overclock

 

You are using slightly more than stock voltage  to gain 400MHz.

I don't know what to do here. Is my memory possibly unstable?

It's beyond frustrating to go balls deep on a build and not be able to find stability.

possibly a weak IMC

 

did you try overclocking with only two sticks of ram installed instead of 4?

 

did you set memory at 1333MHz 1.5V?

 

your cooling looks sufficient.

 

are you on the latest official bios?

I did bring the ram to 1333 @ 1.5v

 

i did not try to OC with 2 sticks.

 

And I am on the latest official BIOS.

btw my build is running a swiftech mcp-655 with 960mm or radiator real-estate with corsair sp120's @ 2200 rpms down the line. Cooling shouldn't be an issue.

try just two sticks see if it makes any difference

 

you may have to adjust the processor analog i\o voltage to run all 4 sticks.

my system is:

 

Mobo - MSI Z87 G45 Gaming

CPU   - 4670k

DDR3 1600Mhz cl8 1.5v

ssd 120gb

hdd 1tb

GTX 570

PSU - Corsair CX750w

 

So my stable oc is:  (tested with intel extreme tuning utility 8h)

 

core multi x44

core voltage 1.280

 

cache multi x44

cache voltage 1.280

 

RAM all auto with x.m.p profile 1600Mhz 8-8-8-24, auto voltage 1.5v

 

PCU input voltage (VVCIN) 1.9 V

 

cooler h100i temps don`t go higher than 69c 64~ average

 

i can`t run system if i get cache voltage  to 1.270, 10 min and all freezes with stesstest in intel extreme tuning utility

1.)are those voltages ok?

2.) what are safe voltages for core and cache? i want to get 1:1 on 46 multi,

3.) does cache speed really impact performance so much?

i'm not really sure if that's important to know but yeah. i did it with 2 sticks of ram.

 

i just tried to let a test run while i was out doing something

set ram clock manually and make ram voltage 1.55 it helped for my stability

1- your voltages are very acceptable well done.

 

2.  safe vCore 1.5V or lower

    

     safe cache voltage 1.45V or lower

 

3. cache speed does impact performance. your always best off if you can run at a 1:1 ratio and you will maximize your performance\watt but dont obsess over a 1:1 ratio. cpu frequency is still king

you still having issues?

 

how many sticks of ram are in there?

 

try to bump up you PIV to 2.2V ( bring it down later)

thank you, i`m really happy with x44 and 1:1 ratio, don`t think i`ll need more.

even at default 4670k is great processor for gaming

in bios when u click with mouse on auto table of mhz`s appears, select 1333, 

i tried set clock from auto to link ans made it 9-9-9-24 (by manufacturer)

then changed volts to 1.5 in bios it posted as 1.505

 

vvcin auto

 

core 44x

core volts 1.250

 

that how it worked for me first time, 10h in intel extreme tuning utility for a night

 

maybe u need to increase a little vvcin? what was your default? mine 1.780, try set manually to 1.880 maybe

Hi Prokon,

 

First off, thank you very much for this guide, it helped me a lot with OC'ing my new rig.  My previous gaming pc was an i7 920, so I was completely lost with regards to which settings to adjust.

 

The Gigabyte motherboard I got comes with software that sets a 4.4GHz OC (cpu:ring 1:1) which I will probably go with because I'm having problems achieving 100% stability with manual OC above that anyway.

 

Currently I'm at (everything else at default):

   vCore: 1.485V

   vCache/Ring: 1.485V

   vCCIN: 2.2V

   Core multi: 47

   Cache/Ring multi: 30

   Temps max/average: 85C / 75C

 

Windows is stable, no lock ups or reboots.  XTU runs just fine to begin with, but I'm getting this message at random intervals (usually after 2+ hours):

After which XTU closes down, and I have to manually start it up again.  Is this a sign of instability or a sign of software bugs; have I somehow broken windows/XTU by the many crashes and BSoDs?  Should I reinstall XTU, or windows? Please don't make me reinstall windows, lol.   I suppose I could reset cmos to default and see if it also happens then, if it does that must mean it's not related to OC'ing...

 

Incidentally, OCCT (which I know you say not to use) causes spontaneous reboot at the settings above after a few minutes.
