PSU ranking and tiers

Just now, EvilNeo said:

guys are the those on each tier are sorted in quality?
what i mean is at tier one for example:
Antec - High Current Pro, High Current Platinum is better than  EVGA - G2?

also i want to ask regarding EVGA G2 and GS are those two quiet or does they make  noise?
and does performance differs greatly between the G2 and the GS?

Antec's two options there are both very good. The G2 is about on-par. The G2 is a bit louder than the GS and as the wattage increases I do believe the G2 units get louder. The GS is silent so I'd get that. No, the performance is not drastically different between the two.

yeah a 520w psu will be fine even a 400w would be fine so you'll be fine even if you plan to upgrade to a more powerful gpu and cpu if you choose so in the future

Spoiler

My system is the Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Microsoft Signature Edition

Is it fine if a pair the EVGA 500w with a i3 6100 and GTX 950? EVGA 500w is really cheap and the S12 is $20 more. Which one? EVGA 500 or S12?

The 500B will be fine. Avoid the non bronze-rated one.

W1 are terrible - avoid
B1 are worse than S12II - I prefer S12II for future upgrades
G1 - are FSP Aurums essentially

Is an 850w Corsair RMx Series good enough for a GTX 980 Ti or should I get EVGA G2/P2 instead or something else?

I completely overlooked the PSU, I didn't realise it was so complicated. Lesson learned.

I think the Corsair 850W would be fine since the RMx is high quality though pricey.

Easy - it's a cheapo budget PSU OEMed by FSP or Compucase (not exactly sure which, I know FSP do the G1 NEX but not 100% sure about B1)

No one has any idea what platform the B1 Nex is based on from FSP. Some people say the FSP raider but have zero proof for it and according to Orion its based on the FSP epsilon but I highly doubt anyone would use a platform form 2005 for a modern psu, its like polishing a turd. Plus modern psu's mainly use the 12V rail which older psu's weren't designed for.

Everest / Espilion are FSP GLN/GHN derivatives.

I would like to apologized. I believed I was among the people who mislabeled the platform. During my comparison of the internals through the exhaust, I may have looked at the same internal twice and gotten confused.

So my current PSU is the Corsair TX850, which has worked great for me for a long time. However it is now nearly 8 years old and has started to give some significant coil whine. I am looking to replace it with another 850w PSU and am leaning towards either the EVGA 850g2 or the Seasonic X850. Does anyone have any other suggestions in the $90-$130 price range?

You could look at Antec's High Current Platinum series but I'd honestly go for the SeaSonic.

Either is a good option. Whichever is cheaper should be fine.

Thanks for the advise. Just curious for what reasons you would go for the SeaSonic over other options?

X850 is generally a bit better than the G2 in my eyes.

S12 in a heartbeat. The XT is the worst thing from XFX.

Thank you for the quick response. I didn't see it ranked so it's probably a good addition to the list!

Hey

I looked up the ones in tier 1,2&3 most of the ones in tier 1(&some in 2) are damn expensive would the ones in tier 3 be good enough to not burn down when I overclock and support a 980Ti(yeah I know about pascal) ......also my PC would be user mostly for gaming and (a bit of) video editing

There are a few that are Tier 3-ish but most are "meh."

If you can afford a 980ti then you can afford a decent PSU. The EVGA B2/GQ are both good and inexpensive.
