What areas are overclocking best for

I know gamers like to overclock a lot but are there any other reasons people overclock and why is overclocking so popular.

Okay, so you generally overclock CPUs and GPUs to get more operations per second, and maybe RAM to get faster speeds.

 

More CPU power means that you can do any CPU-based task quicker, while more GPU power will generally mean that you can run games at a higher framerate, among other things.

Overclocking is its own game, its very enjoyable for me at least since I mainly do GPU benching.

Take performance of the card and the amount of megahertz it's running at.

divide the megahertz you're adding by the card's clocks speed

Now do 1+(proportional increase that you just calculated)*performance numbers

should roughly equal overclocked performance.

GPU with 1000MHz clock speed gets overclocked to 1500MHz (so a 500 MHz or 50% overclock) 50% because 500/1000 = 1/2 or 50%

If you previously got 40fps in a game, that overclock would (theoretically) result in your getting 60fps in a game. 1000/1500 = 40/60

Remember that this math is very theoretical though. There are other factors that play a role in the performance of a game, so it is unlikely that this would give you that exact increase in performance.

It depends upon what you're overclocking (CPU, GPU, or RAM) and what program you're using, but it does give you a visible performance increase.
