R9 390x vs GTX 980 for editing

I am debating whether to get a R9 390x or a gtx 980 which have a $100 AUD price difference, I am going to be doing a lot of editing in premiere pro, after effects and a bit of photo shop and I was wondering which is faster in these programs.

Depends on the OS oddly enough, AMD Hardware acceleration for photoshop on the R9 series is only enabled in Windows 8... I don't know performance specs enough to compare the two, but that was one odd thing I ran into this week when adjusting my workflow.

Well a 980 is faster so faster = better, right? If you're gonna save money then there's nothing wrong with a 390X.

Is it OpenCL or OpenGL? Based on that you should chose like this.

OpenCL=AMD

OpenGL=Nvidia

AMD card has more VRAM and that is handy for this!

tbh, don't even buy a 980. Get a 970 and put that money into a CPU (unless of course you have a i7-4770K/4790K/5820K/5830K/5960X). Unless you are using Maya, 3DS MAX, Blender, or any other 3D program that can utilize the full power of the GPU, there is no point on spending and extra 200-300 on a 980 over a 970...

is 970 and 980 gpu accelerated rendering and editing performance are same??

if you use any kind of a 3d programes like maya.. better to go with an amd firepro card or quadro card...

Can anyone provide evidence (i.e. performance benchamarks) to prove this? No one has so far and I was under the impression that AMD cards are now more supported than ever, with Adobe making real use of OpenCL as opposed to Cuda..

 

I'm about to buy a new card for the same reasons as the OP and have yet to decide due to the lack of information. I would like to see the differences when scrubbing through timelines of different sizes with lots of effects and also to see if it helps with the render at all.

 

As someone has already mentioned, CPU matters far more than GPU when editing, along with disk setup (Media cache's etc)

yap .. but adobe primere is supprt cuda than open cl... means adobe primere is better with nvidea cuz there is some matters with loading plugings with amd cards ..some times its crashed...but after effects is better perform with amd cards.. i dont why!!! better cpu and disk setup useful to make faster the rendering and editing speed..

Premiere supports Cuda and OpenCL, so I'm already doubting what you are saying. I think you should come back with some evidence not an opinion. Give me a link or a reference that is FACT.

Question 1: Well the're different cards from different manufacturers

 

Question 2: I've never seen Linus or any of his employees using AMD cards, although this is most likely because they have a better relation ship with nvidia than with AMD

 

Question 3: In the after effects system requirements it says an openGL capable system, not exactly sure what openGL is but it's gota mean somthing.

OpenCL is faster with my eexperience wth 2x7970. When I would render videos with the GPU's it would be significantly faster. However it depends, Adobe products don't support SLI/Crossfire scaling. Like my 780 ti can render videos faster than one my 7970s could. Simply because it has more compute power with Cuda programs. Like everyone here said, it depends...

was JayzTwoCents. He announced that he would do a Fury X vs 980 TI "prosumer workstation" comparison.

He was also going to do videos of 360, 370, 380 and 390/390X. Which is great because seriously, none of the other reviewers has bothered to show us how much performance increase or decrease it was for ANYTHING other then 390/390X
