Basement Water Cooling Project (No More Remote Trigger - July/8/2016)

Picture Update!

Even though I bought the parts from performance-pc today, I decided to go to home-depot now for the remaining parts. I actually think I'll have everything ready when the performance-pc's package gets here!

I got all the fittings, and copper piping. I actually think two lengths of 5 ft copper pipe might be enough, but I got 4 + couplings just to be safe. I woulda gotten 10ft sections, but that wouldn't fit in my car.

The fittings from left to right, up to down are

2x 1/2" pipe SharkBite couplers
4x 1/2" pipe SharkBite to 1/2" ID fitting (I know I'll have to stretch the tubing over it. Not really worried about it. Tighter fitting = win anyways.
1x 3/4" to 1/2" fitting for the inlet on the pump.
2x 1/2" to 1/2" fitting for the eventual spots I'll drill into the bucket for fitting these into, if that'll even work. I feel like it wont be an issue.

what you using the epoxy for ? if its for connecting the copper pipe use leadfree solder, or something along that line . i  wouldnt chance it myself with the epoxy getting into the blocks . but everything else looks great .give the fittings a wash before using so no oils or left overs are there . plumbers tape good 5 gallon res check

I'm assuming right to install the fittings into the bucket to make it water tight. I would suggest using a tube of silcone instead but that being said I've never used JB Weld before.

The JB weld is more or less for the pipe fittings in case I wanna have an extra layer of security there. I have straight apoxy already for use w/ the bucket and those fittings.

For the sharkbite fittings your pretty much good they rated for in wall installation, those things bite on like crazy.

What are the fittings for?  When I was doing the discharge line for my water softener, I was able to use some silicone grease and stretch 1/2" tubing over the outside of 1/2" copper pipe and then put down some hose clamps.

Oh yeah and brass is really overpriced compared to using nylon.  http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/121/95/=xrtsai

The only place I had to use brass was to reduce 1" to 3/4" NPT in an elbow because no one made it in plastic.  $20 a pop for each one...cray cray.  AND I ended up getting one where the threading was gacked, but McMaster is awesome and told me to just keep it and sent me a new one....and that was me calling at 10 PM when I discovered the problem and a white person picked up.

Well I bought em. I wanna do this the way its supposed to be done. And they weren't even close to 20 dollars a piece. EVERYTHING I bought was like 120 dollars, including the pipe, the bucket, the copper cutting tool, and all the fittings.

Also, for the Nylon you linked.
"Maximum Temperature: 110° F"
No thanks. I know the water in the system wont get that hot, but still. its too close for comfort for me.

Also random updates for lulz.

The fittings on the top end of the pipe. The SharkBite connector is REALLLLYYYYYY impossible to take off. I knew that putting em on one end of the pipe, i could test trying to take it off, and I couldn't.

stbJgyfl.jpg

Drilled the 1/2" hole through the floor. This was a PAIN (drill couldn't handle it easily), and it's not even done yet. The pipe's INNER diameter is half an inch, so I still need to take a little bit more out. just need a bigger bit. Shouldn't be difficult. Also the thing in the back hole is an old halloween decoration that I tore up, because it was the only thing I could find that was stiff, but thinner than the hole, and long enough to poke through so I could see where this all came out in the basement.

WeBVm3Ll.jpg

There it is! And yes, I will restaple the insulation back to the baseboard once I begin feeding the pipe downstairs. The insulation wrapping tore way too easily >.<

udkuL6cl.jpg

The back pipe will be about 1 inch away from the concrete. Pretty lucky there, but absolutely in the clear. All is well.

For the sharkbites you need to compress that beige plastic before the copper pipe inward to release it:

Also is this going into an unheated space I'd be a bit worried if you guys have freezing cold winters.

We do, but the basement has a heater for the space, so I'm not overly concerned.

Also, just to throw this out there. The pump will be hooked up to a battery backup, so if my power fails outright, both my pc, and the water cooling system will be fine.

Quick Update:

Pump arrived! Just awaiting all the other parts. Gotta go to Home Depot and pick up a FNPT half inch fitting for the top. got the fitting for the inlet installed w/ pipe tape, and it's quite the tight seal. I also need to pick up a MONSTER-long extension cable, as I only just realized my only power outlet in the basement is across the basement, lengthwise xD.

I also gotta pick up a 2nd vice grip, because getting the reduction fittings onto the sharkbite connections is just NOT happening w/o 2 tools. I can't put enough force onto it to screw them in properly. Obviously wasn't an issue w/ the pump.

Also gotta pick up a table to set everything on. As long as it can hold 3ish gallons of water in my 5 gallon bucket, the pump, and the rad, I'll be good.

Made my final order! last thing I gotta do is get the last pump fitting from Home Depot, as well as some sort of sturdy table to put all this on. I might get a wooden table from Target or something.

EDIT: It just occured to me I have an EXTREMELY sturdy spare desk from my recent move in my garage, begging to be assembled. So I JUST need that fitting, and have all the parts arrive on Tuesday. I'll likely assemble this all on tuesday or wednesday. So much for the "August" plan xD

Nope, the rad is 480mm that I ultimately got, so 4 120mm fans is correct.

You're going to need a smaller pump to prime that bigger pump.  They have no ability to prime themselves and smallest air bubble screws them over (just starts slapping water around in itself).

(EDIT: Probably be ok if the pump is significantly lower than the reservoir and can't gravity prime, but even at that pressure-priming it is quick and painless).

The pump will be sitting lower than the fitting that will be on the side of the bucket. And I'm not gonna spend extra money on something so miniscule, when its not really going to be an issue anyway.

It would be a problem to run the pump dry if it had a free flow of air. But with the pressure the water will be putting on the inlet for the pump, the pump's motor won't spin out of control, especially not when there will be less than a foot of tubing between it and the reservoir.

i think hes talking about it running dry most of these pumps if they run dry or have a large air bubble stuck in them they die fast since the water is a lubricant for the pump motor . they just grind them selfs to pieces . but if you put enough pressure from the water in the 5gal pal you should be fine .

i would say if you think there is a air bubble in the pump while moving it around blow into the res and force the water thru it , but with a 5gal bucket you cant . when you first turn the pump on it may make some loud noises from the air moving thru the impeller but if it quiets down after a few minutes then your good . this is once all the air that's moving thru the lines is gone already .

A bunch of the parts arrived today! At this point, I have enough hardware on hand to assemble the basement portion of the system and test it. Pretty much just hooking up a bunch of the tubing, and seeing if everything works. I have all the compression fittings as well, but they're not shown on camera.

I may or may not do that today, as I have a lot of work to do before a trip this weekend.

Sorry for the double post, but I figured this was a good enough reason to bump.

ASSEMBLY BEGINS...kind of. I'm awaiting the fans & a large enough screw-bit to finish the holes in my floor. EVERYTHING else came in, so I decided to get to work and test the system.

Tried the tube going from the res to the pump just sitting in the bucket. Didn't work, but I thought I'd try it. Got the hole drilled, epoxied the spot where the fitting is screwed in, and let it sit for an hour. So far, no leaks, but I'm gonna let it run for a while.

The water (Obviously) runs pretty fast, but the fittings are absolutely fine. It won't run nearly as fast when it hits the 6-7 feet of head pressure it'll obviously have, but it works great!

Also, you guys are batshit insane...if you're one of those guys who says sticking 3/8" tubing over a 1/2" barb is hard. That was so simple. I was expecting a fight.

Edit: I'm also glad the barbs are 1/2" and not 3/8". Feels MUCH more secure than I think it would otherwise.

EDIT2: I think just for the sake of doing it, I'm gonna buy one of these to ensure that nothing EVER grows in the loop. I don't want to be making a Part 5a to this post about how stuff is growing in the loop :P.

http://www.amazon.com/Green-Killing-Machine-Internal-Sterilizer/dp/B001KP9B2W

EDIT 3: Cleaned up the setup lol. Drilled a hole in the top of the bucket, and just put the tubing in there. Didn't think of any problem with that, and it's one less fitting to worry about. The paper towel on top of the bucket is JUST in case evaporation is a problem, as the system is not entirely air tight, but it's really really close. After 5-6 hours, no noticeable drop in water level (and I did mark the bucket to check). I think I'd have to check after a week to really know.

I also put in the molex power adapter, and have a fan going that I had in my closet, just to test to make sure it works. All is well so far!

YET ANOTHER UPDATE OF TRIPLE POST GOODNESS. But there's a reason for it.

Got the drill bit I needed, and got the copper piping through the floor. It's quite snug, which is awesome. I also poked it through the basement insulation so I can restaple it to the ceiling, so it doesn't look all ugly.

I did run into one BIG snag though, which will delay the final setup until after Monday. The quick disconnects that I bought were the wrong ones. My tubing is 10/16mm tubing, and there exists a QD4 quick disconnect WITH compression fittings on them. I didn't buy those. The ones WITH quick disconnect fittings are 13/19mm fittings, which with the tubing stretched over the 13mm barb, will work just fine.

Now I have spare compression fittings to attach onto the ends of my current Quick disconnects, but they don't seal properly, and I'm not about to do final assembly with a known leaky component.

So I ordered 3 of the CORRECT quick disconnect fittings, will be returning the unopened ones if I can, and I'll call it a day. There will be two quick disconnect fittings upstairs (one for each tap, so I can unplug the rig whenever needed), and one downstairs coming immediately after the bucket, so I can take the bucket out, and drain it if I need to, and refill, without having to fight with it.

Besides the new quick disconnect fittings, I have literally everything I need to assemble the entire system. But I'm not gonna plug everything in without quick disconnects. When those come in, I'm gonna leak test the whole system with the computer off for 8ish hours, and if no leaks arise, the system will be done.

Also cleaned up the setup, and tucked the wiring into the desk. Looks really slick, and will be even better when it's functional.
