I wanted to ask a question, what does G mean?

Graphics Double Data Rate 5 (GDDR5) the "5" denotes the generation. Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) does not exist as of now.

GDDR5 is Graphics memory. 

DDR5 isn't really a thing. You have DDR3 and DDR4 which system memory.

 

GDDR5 compared to DDR3 and DDR4 is way faster.

DDR5 doesn't exist.

GDDR5 is essentially DDR3 for graphics with a lot faster speeds but higher latency.

Fun fact: there is no DDR5 (yet).

 

GDDR5 derives from DDR3, but is specialized for use in graphics cards. It features significantly higher frequencies, but as a direct result is more expensive.

GDDR is memory based on DDR, optimized for use on graphics cards.

It's important to note the generation numbers for DDR and GDDR do not match up.

GDDR2 is based on DDR

GDDR3 is based on DDR2

GDDR4 is based on DDR3

GDDR5 is based on DDR3

It is also important to note that some low-end graphics cards often use regular memory instead of its GPU-optimized counterpart (i.e. DDR3 instead of GDDR5) but retailers will often mislabel this as "GDDR3" so be careful.
