I've got a decent rig, but I can't use it at its best. What can I do?

Hello.

I am a 17 year old guy that happens to have a pretty high end PC. My dad paid for that. We both decided to go for i7, for no reason really. And now, I feel bad, because the only thing I do on this PC is... gaming. I could go with i5. However, I don't feel like changing, so here comes the question - what can I do with my rig, so I will use the bloody thing to the max? I know rendering, but the only thing I can think about connected with rendering right now is running a youtube channel, and with my internet I don't feel like doing that, at all. I'm thinking about folding, because it's a good cause, so that's one thing. But I want to do something else when not in idle. I see all these 32GBs RAM 5960X's, AND HELL I WANT ONE, but I just don't know how could I use it. Even if this thing would need a whole lot of learning etc., I'm up for that. I can do that even for free. JUST. GIVE. ME. SOMETHING. TO. DO. WITH. MY. PC.

You can fold, do any kind of graphic design (3d modeling, photoshop, etc.), you can create games. You can also code algorithms to solve long problems. There are many things you can do for raw power.

CAD programs, 3D modelling. Graphical design.....Just a few options, all are heavily dependent on how good your rig really is.

Open 3 different mmo games at once. Then play League of legends while you let your character idle in the mmo games.

3D modeling is a really good one. I made my profile picture myself on my i3 rig and it took 10 minutes to render. Normally slightly more complex objects take an hour for me to render.

@veimiK consider jumping up to 1440p / 4k gaming? That's how my 4790k + GTX980 is used most of the time, and I'm also 17 years old (except I paid for everything out of my own pocket ;))

I have 4770K for future proofing. You don't need to do anything. Just occasional video editing and rendering gets satisfaction when you see i7 maxed out.

You could always just sit opening and closing 50 tabs on chrome, that's probably what I'd do..

But you don't have to do something with it right now. I built what you were talking about a 'strictly gaming' PC, cos I didn't see myself needing to do video editing or that at the time. Year or so down the line I ended up needing to do a fair bit of it for college and personal stuff. So just because you don't need it now won't mean you won't need it at some stage!

My modded minecraft uses around 50% CPU usage and pulls nearly 60% out of my GPU

I think this is what I'm going to do actually. 1440p 144Hz seems like a cool sweetspot for me.

The profit would be the experience and knowledge gained. You can do just about anything with virtual machines. Run multiple OS's at the same time, all running various programs/processes. Gives you the ability to try out/learn various other OS's (Linux distros, for example) without actually installing them on a physical PC. The list goes on... ;)

Naaah, overkill doesnt exist. Anyways, you will get to its limits in 2-3 yrs. Because its pretty high end you have more headroom for upcoming titles

Well, he's fine on his own. He has an 3770k with a GTX 660 that he is not using, so I might grab it in order to fold with it. What do you mean by learn my BIOS?
