Need help getting the best motherboard for overclocking and etc for 4790K.

Go to solution Solved by Hans Power,

Thank you. I went with the Gigabyte gaming 7.

Looks like a good choice. I like the layout - good ventilation for your SLI build.

Need help getting the best motherboard for overclocking and etc. So far looking at these.

Motherboards have a very small to no affect on overclocking, esspecially with Intel. They more or less are about features, ports and connections. They are of course some handy dandy features that make overclocking easier, but it's nothing massive or involved with the actual overclock.

Seeing as you will be using Silver Dominators and Silver Titan's combined with a black Cpu cooler, black drives, black case and black powersupply, I guess you want a stealth build.

Since the main colours are silver and black, I would not go with any other colours that stand out in the build.

My advise: Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1

Do not install the middle fan though. That fan is very small and can get extremely loud. The back fan is ok as far as noise.

That time I saved Linus' WiFi pass from appearing on YouTube:

Motherboard is all about features and aesthetic.  Overclocking comes down to how good of a chip you get.  Silicon lottery.  I'm a big fan of Asus, so I would say get Asus, but you really can't go wrong with any as long as it has the features and look you want.

Some build recommendations:

Arctic Silver 5 is not good TIM.  Buy: Gelid GC Extreme, MX-4, IC Diamond, Prolimatech-PK3, Noctua NT-H1.

Dominator Platinum RAM is way overpriced.  RAM is RAM, get something less expensive, there is no difference in performance whatsoever.  All you are buying is a brand name.  If you are ok with that, then sure, buy the, but it is a waste.  You can get just as good, even better RAM, 16GB for $100-$120.

Buy a different chassis.

Just noticing your running dual titan x's but only 1600mhz ram dose not really make sense in my opinion.

Dominator RAM could be half price and it would still cost more than tam that's just as good.

Why? Ram speed does not really do anything for fps in gaming.

It actually does make a decent difference when you have multiple GPUs. Anandtech did a study on it. I'm on my kindle otherwise I would link it. Search for Haswell and memory frequencies or something like that.

Most games don't there are a few that do but when your spending 230$ for only 16gb of 1600mhz ram.

Buy this for less money but the exact same specs:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f31600c7d16gtx

Or buy this for insane speed for less money: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f32666c11d16gtxd

Or buy this for insane capacity:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f31866c10q32gzm

Or buy anything else for that manner Ram is Ram you don't get anything from buying dominator ram except for a empty wallet.

I already have everything else. I'm not worried about the price of the ram I spent. My question is about the motherboard. Ram was only $100 :)

If you just want to do overclocking then the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC is propably worth considering - it is almost exclusively build for massive overclocks and supports everything you'd need to break some records like with liquid nitrogen. That said if you just want to do normal overclocking, any of the boards from your selection will do more than fine.

When choosing a Z97 board there are several things to look out for. Performance is pretty much the same with every board, so that is usually not a factor - it's the feature set to look out for like:

- Different audio solutions - there are several different ones but they often come down to the same thing: some destinctive sound colouration and a headphone amplifier for high impedence headphones

- SLI/Crossfire support (some only have CF)

- Onboard buttons like on/off switches, reset or buttons to assist with overclocking

- Board layout: Important if you are, for example, planning an SLI/CF build with GPUs with triple slot coolers, then you'd want extra space between the PCIe slots.

- Fan headers: How many fans do you want and how much do you want to control them? ASUS has the best solution for that with highly configurable fan control options in the UEFI, while Gigabyte and Asrock have more rudimentary fan control options - not sure what MSI has to offer.

- Cooling: Usually if it has some heatsinks it'll be just fine but there are some exceptions with heatsink which have extra fittings on them for watercooling like the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming G1 Wifi-BK

- LAN ports: Several options there - the Intel NIC is supposedly the best followed by the Killer E2200 followed by your standard realtek onboard LAN - I'm not sure, though what they do differently - I have to research that at some point. Also having onboard wifi is always nice if needed.

- Build quality: as I recently discovered there are infact some differences there, at least between Asrock and everyone else - Asrock has a thinner PCBs with many of their mobos which leads to them being less sturdy and often more warped out the box than the competition - if that's a concern, then better get something else.

- Other features like Gigabytes DAC USB ports with more stable currents, or Asrocks game port where you can set the polling rate independent from the mouse you're using might be useful to you. On the other hand there's snakeoil like MSIs red gameports - cause gold on the connector sure doesn't make your mouse more accurate - so look out for that!

I hope I didn't miss anything and that this is helpful to you.

You mean this article http://www.anandtech.com/show/7364/memory-scaling-on-haswell/8 that does not even use the the gpu that I use and its AMD gpu. Also that resolution that I don't play at.

I still see no difference in 1600MHz to overpriced 3000MHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231688

How the hell did you get dominator pro RAM for 100$

Friend owns pc store and I get the hook ups because I work for free there on my days off. :) Also Windows 7 Home Premium does not support anything higher than 16Gbs of ram. :(http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/windows-7-is-it-32-or-64-bit-and-how-much-ram-will/ba73a9b1-142d-4a90-860c-db19a325327d

Thanks. That is one of the main reasons I picked it. I bought the long way EVGA Pro SLI bridge that just came out to match my EVGA Titan X's

Very interesting info. Still My ASRock z97 Pro4 don`t give a f@ck about the Noctua NH-D14 which I slapped on it. There is no flexing at all. :)
