cat5 and 6 are actually different cables connectors, usb 3 is a different cable and connector than usb 2, but is reverse compatible and as of now sata connection is the same across the board like pci-e, although pci-e 4 is supposedly changing things

????

A Cat6 cable terminated by a standard RJ45 plug (with the T568A or T568B pin assignments on both ends) functions the same as a Cat5E and Cat5... the only difference is in the supported speed and the durability of the cable (Cat6 is shielded as opposed to Cat5)...

I worked with all of them before...

SATA is the same, but I'm just speculating on the specs of the cable that may or may not allow the 6Gbps on SATA III...

nope, the sata cables are the same through and through, no internal differences it's all marketing, and you are right about the cat 5 and 6

I can understand why people might buy some expensive cables but what idiot would buy one of these, no matter the image quality the reviews claim. http://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-Diamond-52-49-Braided-Cable/dp/B00IL3TZSQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437307969&sr=8-1&keywords=diamond+hdmi It would be cool if Linus could get a sample and tell us if they are worth the free shipping.

If that thing has good in-line noise filtering then I might just consider it... (but it doesn't... the sleeving looks good though...)

I'm still trying to buy one of those. I WANT NEED ONE OF THOSE TO WATER MY NON-EXISTENT LAWN IN GLORIOUS FULL HD!

anyway. OT time!

I was talking to my parents earlier today, telling them I want to invest in a home server for file storage and some light rendering.

Mom started yelling telling me I need to stop investing in "tech crap" and start setting money aside for a car or a house (on my salary, it would take me about 15 years of setting my entire paycheck aside to buy a new, good car or 183 years to buy a 3-room apartment, so yeah. fuck it.) The server would only set me back about $300 by the end of the year, spanned across 5 months, so that's not all that much, imo.

My dad, on the other hand, started researching different server hardware and asked me if I want him to come over one weekend so we can build the server and a nice server cabinet to house it and other things it might need (RAID arrays, a USP, a display for easy management, network switch and miscellaneous hardware). He also wants a slice of the storage space for work files and his personal projects.

I am officially confused by my family.

My grandpa can get angry.. Not very often but when he does he's like the hulk. Imagine a 58 year old man picking up one of those old 49 inc box tvs. The suck has to weigh 300 pounds. Throws it ACCROOSSSS the room. I said what happened to the tv and he pointed at our firepit. I said what happened, he said he couldn't get the HDMI cord to work. So I went in my room and asked him to point what one he tried plugging it into. He pointed to the USB 2.0 . Let's just about half a gallon of gas and some oil and about an hour later it's a big pile,of ashes.

so this one time I was hanging out with my friend who is the manager at a tech shop by where I live and a girl comes in and buys a 2tb hard drive. we let her know that we install hard drives for $1 (the cost of the sata cable we use) and she says "just because I am a woman does not mean I cant work on computers" and leaves in a huff. two days later she comes back in saying that the HDD is not working so we take the computer in to look at it, we open it and the HDD is nowhere to be seen, so we ask her where it is. and it turns out that she scanned it and put the scanned image on her desktop to install the drive. and to top that off she threw away the drive she paid almost $200 for and she wanted us to give her a new one.

EDIT: feel free to quote this comment, I like seeing peoples reactions even though the comment is 2+ years old.

I really don't know how to feel about this one..
