Comcast announces 2Gbps internet service

CaliJL

"One way to answer critics and competitors alike is to simply do better, and for once Comcast is doing exactly that. The US cable giant is today announcing a new 2Gbps broadband service, which it will start rolling out in Atlanta from next month. There's no price yet, but Comcast says it will be symmetrical — meaning you'll upload just as quickly as you can download — and it won't be limited "just to certain neighborhoods."

"Comcast plans to expand to other cities beyond Atlanta and will cover as many as 18 million American homes by the end of 2015. For much broader gigabit coverage, the company also says it's working on a 1Gbps service — matching the speed of Google Fiber — for 2016, which it says will be able to connect "almost every customer in our footprint."

Update:

Comcast VP of internet sales states that there will not be any data caps the 2gbps service, as for the price
Comcast's previously fastest tier was its 505 Mbps down, 65 Mbps up "Extreme 505" coaxial/fiber hybrid service. That service costs users $400 a month, features a $1,000 early termination fee, a $250 activation fee and a $250 installation fee. The Comcast bleeding edge certainly isn't cheap, so it will be interesting to see if Google Fiber applies some downward pricing pressure.

Aren't they struggling enough to get 10/1 speeds constant already? Without going for 2Gbit?

I'm curious how there going to do this since AFAIK g.fast has a limit of 1gbps and that's only if you have like a 100m cable run from a node

See what competition does folks? I recall a year or two ago Comcast or TWC was saying that there is literally "no demand" for 1 Gbps Internet and that's why they weren't offering it. But here we are today, they say they're bringing out 2 Gbps.

Although I don't trust them enough that it'll be as good as they claim. I won't be surprised if they're going to grease it with some absurd terms and conditions.
