Elon Musk believes it'll be illegal for humans to drive in the future

Rohith_Kumar_Sp

Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and all-round technology wünderkind, has predicted that a day may come when humans are banned from driving, simply because driverless cars are so much safer than we are.

"In the distant future, [legislators] may outlaw driven cars because they’re too dangerous,We’ll take autonomous cars for granted in quite a short time."

His prediction came just after Tesla announced it would be introducing an autopilot driving mode for its Model S electric cars, and a few weeks after a ridiculously cool driverless Mercedes blew all our minds by driving itself around San Francisco, proving that the future of autonomous vehicles is almost here.

However, he took to Twitter to clear up the fact that he's not endorsing a driverless future, he simply predicts it

@elonmusk

But Musk isn't the only one who thinks that driverless cars are going to be a whole lot better for our roads than unpredictable and easily-distracted humans. A Swedish study earlier this year found that self-driving automobiles could reduce traffic jams and congestion, and 2013 data suggests that they're also a lot safer.

Only time will tell whether computers take over our roads, as they have done with much the rest of our lives, but until then the thought of being able to read a book while my car navigates through the evening commuter traffic is definitely appealing.

Disagree.

They won't, for the same reason they haven't outlawed Pilots. It is a well-established fact that aeroplanes can take off, fly and land themselves and ALSO account for the loss of vital equipment in dangerous situations etc.

Also, half of crashes are down to Pilot error. So you would think they would outlaw pilots and establish a 100% autonomous commercial flight industry right? Well they haven't, because no one would get on a plane flown by a computer without a pilot. Take the recent crash in the alps. IIRC it was found that the cockpit door had shut and locked the pilot out, leaving no one at the controls and thus the plane crashed. That wouldn't happen if a computer was flying.

So by all logic, I agree - humans shouldn't be driving cars, computers should. But by the same logic that would stop people getting on a pilot-less aircraft, i highly doubt we are going to see largely if not solely autonomous-vehicle dominated road networks.

I agree, humans are idiots.

Yep.

Too bad it will probably take a loooonnggg time before any government makes computer driven cars mandatory (mostely because there will probably be a lot of idiots shouting no)

My source was different along with the twitter feeds. this is confusing, it's kinda the same but totally different sides, and not just two twitter images as the other thread.

What a very bleak future. We'll reach a point where humans are so redundant the only jobs left will be cycling to generate electricity. We'll wake up, be driven to the slave farm Generator plant by our driverless cars, generate for 12 hours a day, then be driven home and go to sleep.

Robots will just take over most mundane tasks, and the people that now have those jobs will just no longer have to work. Only the tasks that requite special skill or intellect won't be taken over

Which is at most 10% of the population. Then 90% of the population is no better than slave labour. You can't have 7 billion "specialists". Then no one would be a specialist.

Sometimes, it shouldn't be because we can but why we should. Robots replacing humans in mundane tasks would make things better for the elite of society but so much worse for everyone else.

SNIP

That is why I think we need a combination of both, perhaps if that plane detected no pilot it could engage autopilot and fly itself until somebody regained controls

Just like cars have radar cruise control, automatic braking, and automatic lane correction - but still require a driver, but in case he falls asleep, or accidentely forgets to brake the computer is there as a backup

That is where I see the future being

Why send humans to generate electricity when there's fusion reactors right next door?

No what I mean is that they just no longer have to work. They will get a base income and don't need to work for it, energy plants or slave labour. I'd link you to a great article but it's in Dutch. Only the 10% intellectuals will have to work

I like this delusion you have that humanity will be perfect and people will get paid for not working. Sounds a lot like communism but with no work. See how well those systems have worked throughout history?

The 10% will not want to work to support the 90%. Also, you'll just create a system where 90% of people lay about at home, get fat, and die extremely young.

At least right now that's the only the case in America.

History does not always have to repeat itself. And of course there will be problems and difficulties. The only other options I see is complete annihilation before we get to this stage or interplanetary expansion which would make this future highly unlikely.

It has happened a lot, but considering how much the world has changed the last century I highly doubt that history will repeat itself that much anymore. Stuff like nukes and the global instant communication have had a very large impact on a lot of things.

I doubt it will ever be illegal, but I can definitely see there being some kind of tax for not using self-driving car.
