XP SP3 Wont Connect To Wireless

Go to solution Solved by FMQ203,

try setting the wifi as g only, and, as the wifi dongle is 64-wpa only, try using WEP encryption, BUT, it's an outdated encryption method, try to upgrade your wifi card.

Hey guys! So my internet has been down since saturday and I recently got a new router. I got all my devices on the new network wirelessly and had no problem what so ever. I did notice when I was connecting it to my smartphone that the security type changed. The original security type was WEP, and now Verizon supplied me with a router that I think is WPA or WPA2. Anyways, when I got to my old computer I tried to set up the connection through Wireless Network Connection and that didnt work at all. Everytime I try to connect to it would say that the network is out of range, but the network shows all 5 bars lit up. The router is also placed in the room right next to the pc. (about 3 feet away from router) Any help guys? By the way im a noob when it comes to networking.

try connection with Ethernet instead of wireless.

Well that is another problem. If I were to connect it through Ethernet, a cable would run through a bathroom and I wouldnt want my brother to trip and fall in the middle of the night.

I had issues with XP SP3 and WPA2 in several cases (different laptops and different modern routers). Probably due to the way xp and/or drivers for xp and wpa2. If there is a setting for AES and/or TKIP, try both. If not, try to go in and set it to just WPA. If not, WEP will work, but not recommended. If it still doesn't then there might be other issue.

Disable wireless security in the router for a test run and see if it then connects.

If that does not work see if the device is set to DHCP mode (automatically acquire network address in the IP configuration).

Run a wire to test if normal ethernet still works.

Test the adapter in another pc if possible.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

The Ethernet cable is not long enough to reach. The guy with the router just came to install it then left. So I dont know how to to do the first 2 steps.

I think I know what the problem is, the wireless says that its too far but the range detection is high. From that being said I need a new wifi card which has to be wireless N. Thanks
