EU and Japan working on 100Gbit/s connection.

So I found this article on a Dutch tech website. It is about that Japan and the EU are working on a 100Gbit/s Internet infrastructure. The goal is to make 100Gbit/s connections which are cheap and energy efficient. It will use the same cables that are being used in fiber networks.

Japan and the EU are working together with universities and companies, like the Bristol university, the Fraunhofer institution and the universities of Osaka and Fujitsu.

The speeds are estimated to be 5000 times faster than the average EU Internet connection, which is 19,7Mbit/s. Research will probably continue until 2016 and it will take years before the infrastructure will be implemented.

So, what do you guys think about this? I think this is pretty amazing that everyone will have a possibility to have a 100Gbit/s connection in a couple of years. I do worry a bit about the prices they might ask for it :D

Would you choose to have such speeds if it were possible?

I would, but the Deutsche Telekom is dragging its arse about implementing fibre-optics, most of Germany is stuck on ADSL with copper wires, only a few cities have 100Mbit fibre.

honestly I'd be perfectly happy with a 1Gb down/up connection

Yeah, that can be a pain. Here in the Netherlands fiber is becoming more and more popular. Big ISP's are offering fiber connections now :D

but there thinking about implementing it in THE FUTURE!!!(in epic voice) and you never know what internet speeds might be needed then

if something huge doesn't change between now and then a majority of the population still won't see those speeds either way.

actually i heard that 1 hour of 8k footage is 4.2tb 0.0 and with that being in maybe 60 to 120 fps.....oh god....

And here, down in Australia, our government is still arguing whether we should implement gigabit internet (through fibre optics)

Hooray for us. I digress, if this level of internet speeds became readily accessible, say in the next 10 years, I think it would be amazing.

For one, it would drive the eCommerce market, resulting in better economies for nations and it would allow transfer of large volumes of data between scientists, hospitals, etc. allowing people to "talk" and move around large volumes of data easily.

However, I would expect the prices to be fairly expensive, at least for the first few years of consumer introduction and will most likely aimed at enterprises rather than home users, lets face it, we don't need this speed...yet. But if I had the option to have these kinds of internet speeds, TAKE MY (non existent) MONEY NOW

Meanwhile in North America...

Yeah, I am just gonna stop there.

(In all seriousness, great news for everyone involved. Hopefully I can have a 1gb internet connection within the next 5 years, doubt it though considering we are only getting 50 to 100mb fiber just NOW in our homes here.)

Yep meanwhile in (North) America we'll still have what we have now with no improvement for a century or more.

OMG just think of the possibilities...One could run fast and easily an operating system on an online drive..but a gigabit would be more than enough for me..(currently on 10mbits max :)

with better storage solutions and better compression technology it wont be that big of a deal in the future.

it's nice to hear that the connection I pay 35€ per month is almost a 1/3 of the average in the rest of Europe. I would like having 2mb/s in upload instead of  >400kb/s without having to pay over 60€ per month -.- (which I can't get anyway thanks to the lack of fibre)
