I know we all love computer parts, looking at new fancy hardware, and old hardware as well.

But how long do these things really last? Post your experiences you've had so far with the longevity of your parts, I'm kinda curious to see how long "high- end" parts last, and how long low-medium end parts last.

I'm not saying just like.. "oh my graphics card is 3 years old I gotta get a new one" I'm saying actual hardware lifespan.

I've had a few computers in the past, my parent's  computer is around 6 years old now and still going strong, but I read things about motherboards only lasting 3 years, and cpu's not lasting more than 5.  But I know tons of people with parts that are still going strong.

Post your experiences so far!

I have an AMD athlon 64 that's been in the family for about 7 (edit probably longer :P) years and still going strong :D

Yeah that's in my parent's comp, I think it's like an amd athlon ii quad core 2.9ghz? Something like that, it still works perfect haha, the HDD took a crap awhile back but a new one fixed it

My old desktop is running a Q6600 and it's going on 6 years old in a few months. Still a rock solid CPU. I've even thrown 10 video conversions at it simultaneously - managed it despite sounding like it was about to take off.

I might strip it down and turn it into a media storage server.

I think it really depends on the build quality of said piece of hardware. Usually capacitors are the first thing to go in electronics.

We've got an old desktop with some old Celeron proc, 480MB RAM, and a 40GB HDD.

The thing has to be 10 years old, if not close to it.  The integrated graphics chip doesn't support widescreen resolutions, that's how old it is...

I remember XP was so new and shiny and fancy when we got it.

Still works somehow.

I've had some pretty old computers but the most recent one I've had dealing with is my bro's PC which is 6 years old this year.

Literally every component is original, Intel Core 2 Quad (Kentsfield) Q6600 OC'ed to 3.2GHz (never been an issue), BFG GeForce GTX 260 (Stock Speeds), 4GB DDR2 RAM, 500GB Samsung SpinPoint OS/Programs and a 1TB SpinPoint for storage and a Cooler Master PSU that I can't remember the wattage or model, some Asus X38 motherboard that I also can't remember the model of.

6 years and still going strong.

DESKTOP - Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H Processor - Intel Core i5-2500K @ Stock 1.135v Cooling - Cooler Master Hyper TX3 RAM - Kingston Hyper-X Fury White 4x4GB DDR3-1866 Graphics Card - MSI GeForce GTX 780 Lightning PSU - Seasonic M12II EVO Edition 850w  HDD -  WD Caviar  Blue 500GB (Boot Drive)  /  WD Scorpio Black 750GB (Games Storage) / WD Green 2TB (Main Storage) Case - Cooler Master 335U Elite OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
