r9 290 Crossfire or GTX 980?

Dumprukk

So i am stuck on a difficult decision... getting two r9 290's and creating more heat and power consumption, or with a single 980 with less power consumption and less heat output. In my opinion, the 980 is a more elegant choice and will suit me well, but i also think 2 r9 290's will be a killer choice as well. So they both cost around the same...so i narrowed it down to which choice will bring the best performance at 1080p?

980 for elitist status. 290's if you actually care about performance

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I have a 970, I would go with the 980 because I prefer nvidia, I have owned both and it comes down to whatever you like better even if you sacrifice some performance.

Rose's are red violets are blue, without computers I'd know not what to do.

In terms of pure performance the R9 290s win hands down. Unless you really care about anything else, go for the 290s.

The only downside to the 290s would be about $2-$3 more on your monthly power bill. The upside would be much more performance for less.

A 750w should be enough for dual 29 290's, right?

no way I wouldnt recommend going below 1000w but you could possibly get by with a (dont quote me on this) 850w

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

You could easily run 2 R9 290s on a 750W PSU

CPU: R5 5800X3D Motherboard - MSI X570 Gaming Plus RAM - 32GB Corsair DDR4 GPU - XFX 7900 XTX 4GB Case - NZXT H5 Flow (White) Storage - 2X 4TB Samsung 990 Pro PSU - Corsair RM100E Cooling - Corsair H100i Elite Capellix Keyboard Corsair K70 (Brown Switches)  Mouse - Corsair Nightsword RGB

You could do it easily. WoodenMarker made that obvious to me yesterday

a 980 is not going to bottleneck your system, get 1 980 and add a second in 1 year or more, you will eventually have more performance, and a much quieter and cooler computer.

what resolution are you playing at, if you are planning on gaming at 4k, then you will need dual x 980

CPU: Intel Core I5 4590 | GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC | Mobo: ASRock Fatality H97 Performance | Ram: HyperX Fury 8gb 1866 | SSD: Intel 520 series 240 GB | HDD: WD Blue 1TB | Case: Aerocool DS 200 red/black | Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212X | PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620w | Monitor: AOC i2367fh & old HP | OS: Windowws 7

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Have already seen dual 290s running full load on a 760W first hand. With an overclocked 125W CPU no less :)

have you stress tested at all? Is it a single rail unit? I NEEDS TO KNOW

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

When referring to a 760w, it's probably Seasonic's X-760 or Corsair's AX760(i)--all of which use single rails.

More power heavy 290x's measured power draw show that 750w would be fine for a 290 cf: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/5853/his-radeon-r9-290x-4gb-in-crossfire-video-card-review/index23.html

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

Has anyone else seen that the r9 290 has increased in price?

It's tragic, isn't it?

Such a dilemma I have - MSI's crappy 290x for £250 (which might not do well in crossfire), or a good 290 for like £20 less...

Yes and yes :) Full load with furmark/prime95 just to draw max power and see what would happen (nothing), and non-synthetics like Crysis 3 which put everything to 100%...

980 for sure! AMD's crossfire support has been close to none lately. All of the games that need it the most don't support it. Games like Assassins creed unity, dying light, evolve, cod aw, evil within, you name it! It's seriously pissing me off as I got 3 280x in cf. Or you could wait for the new amd 390x that's coming out in a few months

At 1080, a single 290 is sufficient

Some people want more than sufficient ;)
