Just got $1500, need some help...

JonD7

Hello! I got my refund and this is my one time of year that I can afford to upgrade and I think this year I deserve it as I've been so sick I've been bedridden since June.

My original plan was to buy a PC with a Shield tablet so I can use in bed but with the whole 3.5GB debacle I'm not sure if I should go the GTX 970 route.

Things I'll be doing with this build are gaming, painting digitally in Photoshop and possibly getting into After Effects.

I only have a PSU, OS and case, I also have a Dell U2410 1920x1200... I want to stay away from any components that run hot as I live in the desert, it can get to 127% here in the summer.

Here's a list of the hardware I've had in mind.http://pcpartpicker.com/user/JonD7/saved/vBbG3C

Also another thing I could use would be a height adjustable desk as the height of my wheelchairs are always changing, should I shave off some cash for that or wait and just get my preferred PC? I'll have to wait a year.

I just ordered mine earlier this week its at the top end of your price range but for referance... (had plenty of opinions the only thing i caught heck over was the psu http://pcpartpicker.com/p/MhWy3C if you don't want/need a monitor the price diff could easily get you the 980 rather than the 970 and upgrade th cpu if you really want the i7seeiing as you have a psu and OS, or go toward that desk your needing

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Wqj799removed what you dont need the i5 easily oc's over 4ghz even with a bad lottery roll (and run pretty cool) from what i've read (and ive read alot) and the 970 cards arent that far off the 980's tbh when you look at the price could be a good solution to let you enough to get your desk  and still have a very nice rig.

This looks good, I'd still get that shield device though...(preferably tablet+controller)

And about the 970 issue, 3.5 GB is plenty for 1080p gaming, once you move into 4K and possibly 1440p, it becomes a problem

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

Thank you, that's an excellent build! It's hard to decide on which CPU to go with as I do a lot of rendering in Photoshop with large files, my i7 930 takes forever just to add a Filter to an 8k file.

Is there a big difference from going to one 8GB dimm to two 4GB dimm's? Is z97 capable of using all 4 slots in case I'd like to add ram in the future?

My original plan was to buy a single 970 for this build then buy a 2nd next year with an IPS 1440 or 4k monitor with gsync, I love my monitor but it's a bit small.

Another option is to buy a manual height adjustable desk for $150-$200... highly considering this.

2x4 will be faster than 1x8 cause it will actually access more ram at once per cycle

If alot of rendering go to the i7 for the extra threads it will still be a cheaper and comparable build to the one you posted
