Comcast Changes Customer’s First Name To “Asshole”

We know from years of talking to people on the frontlines of customer service and billing that they don’t always have the nicest things to say about customers; you probably wouldn’t either if your day consisted of being yelled at for issues beyond your control. But most people don’t let their distaste for customers boil over to the point where they actually rename a customer “A**hole Brown.”

Granted, Brown is the last name of the customer in this story from consumer advocate Chris Elliott, but her first name is most definitely not related to an anus or any other excrement-connect body part.

And yet, there it is at the top of her Comcast bill, “A**hole Brown,” minus the asterisks of course.

The customer could only surmise that the name change had something to do with her request to bring down her monthly expenses by removing the pay-TV portion of her Comcast package, even though it cost her a $60 fee to cancel. As usually happens in such calls, her cancellation request was escalated to a retention specialist.

 

“I was never rude,” she tells Elliott. “It could have been that person was upset because I didn’t take the offer.”

She says she tried to get some sort of explanation and to have her name changed back, but neither the local nor regional Comcast offices were any help.

Elliott was able to get someone from Comcast HQ on the phone and they took the matter a bit more urgently.

“We have spoken with our customer and apologized for this completely unacceptable and inappropriate name change,” a company rep tells Elliott. “We have zero tolerance for this type of disrespectful behavior and are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what happened. We are working with our customer to make this right and will take appropriate steps to prevent this from happening again.”

She’s since heard from a Comcast senior director of government affairs, who offered to waive that earlier $60 fee and promised that the employee responsible for the name change would be terminated.

A subsequent call from a general manager in her region assured the customer that her name has been corrected.

However, the customer is not satisfied with mere apologies after the fact.

“This is unacceptable,” she tells Elliott. “I am requesting everything back I paid Comcast for doing this to me.”

 

Why am I surprised that Comcast still does this to their customers?! Even after they were voted worst company of 2014, I am still caught off guard when they pull something like this.

This is not Comcast doing this.

 

This is a guy who works in a Call Center FOR Comcast that changed it.

Basically the same as a clerk at McDonalds that calls you an asshole.

Just someone that deals with you but has no ties to the company itself.

 

Has no reflection on Comcast besides they have an asshole customer service rep.

Something terrible needs to happen to Comcast to wake them the fak up... Not to innocent people ofcourse but those responsible. Otherwise they will just continue doing what they want.

Also if she cancles her paymemts with her bank then comcast cant do shit since Asshole Brown doesnt exist :)

If I am not mistaken (I could be) people that work at Comcast call centers are trained by Comcast to give people a hard time when it comes to cancelling services.

Also, Comcast said they would terminate the employee responsible, that makes me think that it was indeed a Comcast employee that was responsible for this.

If you're enough of an asshole to a CSR (who is on a contract from Comcast and rarely Comcast employees themselves) then maybe you need to reevaluate how you deal with CSRs to avoid being labelled an asshole? 

Two sides to every story, just saying. This person could've been a real asshole to people over the phone, which still constitutes being an asshole...

I know I should feel bad, but I've been a retail employee on the floor and in management. Customers can be proper jackasses to employees. You always hear about the bad employee who ruined the customers day, you rarely get to hear about the customer who was entitled and arrogant and got shot down by a senior employee. Cause it happens, it happens a lot. 

I'm just saying. Rarely do people openly act like assholes to you without some provocation from the other side. Someone treating you like an asshole? The more logical explanation is you did something that sent the wrong message, not that they are natural born assholes. Be nice, get treated nice (if not in a neutral manner). Act pompous? You best be ready for the same behaviour in return.

Why do people call Japan weird when 85% of all insane news come from the US?

 

Where else are there companies that say fuck you to the government and their costumers yet they are still allowed to operate?

Where else those companies can sue the government and win after being caught doing illegal things?

Where else is there a government sponsored entity that spies on everybody?

Where else  a person who reveals this plot is labelled as traitor despite everyone knowing he has done nothing wrong?

 

Compared to America, Japan is a little quirky at best.

Either the guy was being a dick so the customer dicked back or the customer was being a dick and this was the guys way of dicking back at her. There's no way of knowing without hearing the conversation. Anyways, $60 back isn't too bad and getting back everything she has ever paid Comcast is a bit unreasonable.

People always pick sides in these cases ... 

 

Both the Comcast employee and the customer are at fault here. Obviously the customer will paint themselves in a better light to sway the public opinions towards them.

They do work for Comcast, but it's a call center. Had friends that worked for them when I lived in Utah. They are normal people that just pick up the phone and help the people that call in. It's not like you're talking to an executive of Comcast. It's just someone doing a job. People tend to go crazy blaming the company when a customer service rep goes full retard.

Cancelling Comcast service is always hard. I couldn't help but laugh at this though. "Asshole Brown". Golden.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Got a flat tire on the way in to school. This just totally erased that. I hope Comcast knows that we the customer feel the same way about them. :D
