MeDownYou

post-172131-0-30174600-1422780431_thumb.

Thread has undergone changes and new thread was warranted. You can find the New thread here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/328135-ghetto-scrub-build-refresh-double-build-log/?p=4455052

Since i'm currently a student this may take a much longer time than i'd like. So without further explanation... here's the build/mod explanation.

1. What is your budget.

2. Use a modular PSU.

3. Do you have a colour in mind.

4. Try modding the dell case without doing a build just for practice.

This is going to be quite a work in progress....

the plan was to see if i could do a few of these mods really for the goal rather than making the best machine for the buck as much of these concepts can then be carried over to when I have money for a good machine.

No color preference atm, but white, red, blue, and black are generally colors that I like.

You not gonna get much out of that case unless you "punch out" the back where the i/o shield. what do i mean? 1ca3faa88a.jpg

Take a look where the ports are, this is the optiplex 740 motherboard, the place where the ports are located is very unorthodox, usually motherboards look like this bf3853017e.jpg

notice how if you line them up they dont match? Well that your first problem, if you dont want to "punch out" the back, you may be stuck looking for a similar 740 style motherboard or using the AM1 motherboards but with out any pci-e cards. If you do "punch out" then that gives you more opportunities to use other motherboards. So, "where do I 'punch out' the case?" well here.

a359efe026.jpg

The place highlighted in red, take a look on how the case is made, you may have to do more work then usual because of this unorthodox case/motherboard. you may have to flip the motherboard base to the otherside.

well thats it for me. hope this helps

Yep, I have windows 7 on my 500gb drive that i'll keep using eventually upgrading to 10 though

The parts with the astriks by them I bought, but as you noticed they are in both builds as Its more of a slight upgrade/sidegrade for 252 bucks, I'll hopefully sell the other system to break even or profit 50 bucks or something

Hey this could have almost been in scrapyard wars if there wasn't shipping it would have been 299.98 CAN :D
