Evga GTX 970 flawed cooler design?

I just read this on a danish forum where someone made a pretty big post, seems like a rather pathetic move from evga, despite them trying to tell the consumer thats its no biggie, ill be getting a msi or gigabyte 970 myself atleast

“The way the EVGA GTX 970 ACX heat sink was designed is based on the GTX 970 wattage plus an additional 40% cooling headroom on top of it. There are 3 heat pipes on the heatsink – 2 x 8mm major heat pipes to distribute the majority of the heat from the GPU to the heatsink, and a 3rd 6mm heatpipe is used as a supplement to the design to reduce another 2-3 degrees Celsius. Also we would like to mention that the cooler passed NVIDIA Greenlight specifications.

Due to the GPU small die size, we intended for the GPU to contact two major heat pipes with direct touch to make the best heat dissipation without any other material in between.

We all know the Maxwell GPU is an extremely power efficient GPU, our SC cooler was overbuilt for it and allowed us to provide cards with boost clocks at over 1300MHz. EVGA also has an “FTW” version for those users who want even higher clocks.

Also it's only a 1-2C difference i've seen so I still would buy one.

Why do people complain about added stuff (for example an extra heatpipe that you would not need) at a product that is competing in thermals and speed with the others?

Well if you're an NVIDIA fanboy you're supposed to keep quiet about any NVIDIA related GPU flaws, so shoosh!

I would buy the MSI twin frozr anyways if I was going to buy a 970, but it sucks for people who really like the EVGA cards.

It's not a design flaw of the cooler, it was designed for a larger chip and they decided to reuse it on the smaller chip in the 970 to save themselves from redesigning it or designing another cooler. If you've seen EVGA's product line for past series of cards you would understand their reasoning behind not wanting to make 4 or 5 different coolers for one card.

I personally have one, and I can tell you that based on the one i got the heat is not an issue, and the noise issue only occurs for isolated cards (the unlucky ones that have one fan running different than the other). My card runs fine and for the ones with problems, they will get a RMA from evga.
