How bad can magnets affect my components?

Hi,

 

I just got a "magnetic pick-up tool" that should be helpful in picking screws or stuff like that are stuck in my PC case. However, I'm afraid that the attraction is too strong, as in the box it says that it can support up to 5lb (2.2kg). Is it too strong for the motherboard and the other components.

If it gets close to your hdd then it will wipe everything off of it

I just use a magnetic screwdriver (Cos the tip is small)

Dunno about your tool, I have one I know how big the ends can be... Dunno if I'd be doing it myself... prob not.

honestly most computer hardware is unaffected by magnets. hard drives are debatable but I've not wiped mine. everything else is largely unaffected.

Hard drives contain very powerful magnets themselves. They are the neodymium magnets that the voice coils in the seek arm act upon. A magnetic screwdriver will not damage a hdd. Not sure on the pickup tool but it's probably fine as long as you don't get too close. All other components will be unaffected by magnetic fields.
