What was the last OEM desktop that you have/had before you started building PCs

Duuude. I was just going to say the exact same one. Although I had Xubuntu on it. Was actually useable with that lightweight os and a 233 MHZ CPU. I would have kept using it or replace the old innards with a NUC, but unfortunately it's now expired with a broken analog board. I'll fix it at some point though as it's very pretty. Also, it came with OS8 didn't it?

It did, but mine had 9 on it. It was my super-computer-nerd cousin's and he had 9 put on it. Probably why I got it...

*shudders* I hated that piece of trash's guts. it  had less storage than my iPod. my iPod, mind you.

I mean, it was so slow and unusable (233MHz) that my first build, an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (*shudders again*), was a dozen times more powerful, and I had Ubuntu running on it as well.

I am so happy that I have the computer I am using right now.

I went from the G3 to an i7 2630QM. Imagine how many times faster that was.

Current one is from 2008 and is my first fully custom build. But I haven't had OEM as main computer since 1996. Then my parents got prebuilt with P2 and Win95. That one changed to another prebuilt in 2001 with Socket A AMD and ATI Radeon 9600. Which eventually was upgraded with S939 Athlon XP. I can't remember whether its still running that Radeon. But otherwise its with Ubuntu.

Dell XPS something-or-other I bought as my first personal computer back in 2006. How I learned about proprietary motherboards, yay. Also, damn thing had an AGP video card, so I got to learn about how I couldn't upgrade my video card either. But, hey, at least it was heavy and ugly.

Well in like 2006 I had a PC with 1GB of RAM and a Pentium D 805. Motherboard was a Foxconn G31 thing.

 

In around 2008 I upgraded it to a Pentium E2200 (given to me), 4GB of ram and later a 9800GT that I got super cheap.

My family always bought Packard Bell desktops and laptops, severally the iMedia, iXtreme and Easynote line of products. My first (and last OEM) purchase was a Samsung Chronos 17 770Z7E notebook.

A Compaq desktop (no idea what model) that I had for years and eventually killed, probably some combination of porn, virus', and my smoking around it. Eventually I went to turn it on one day (had reformated at least 10 times in this pc's lifespan by this point) and got some error message that I don't now remember, called my tech guru buddy, told him the error message and he said the cpu was gone, took the shotgun to it about a week later for the lolz. It was a piece of junk anyways.

I have never myself owned an OEM desktop, my family's last desktop was an OEM desktop it was a Dell Dimension 8400 it ran XP had a P4 and a radeon x300, my last PC before my desktop though was an ASUS N56VJ Laptop, still using it currently as a laptop though as I only built my first desktop 3 months ago, And before that laptop I had a HP G6 laptop that I accidentally dropped a year or so after getting it

My Grandma had some old gateway with a Pentium 4, 512MB ram and Windows XP, and my Dad had an old Dell from around the same era(didn't know the specs).But before I built my own PC he had a Late 2009 iMac with a Core 2 duo, 4GB ram and a Radeon HD 4670M.

My current machine, a HP H8 1010NL bought about 4 years ago, mind you I was about 14 then. I didn't know enough about pc's to build one myself unfortunately. And that machine was a bad decision, a i5 2310, a really weak CPU, 6gb of ram, which was an amazing sweet spot, at the time I didn't need 8gb and 6gb wouldn't have been enough. A gtx 550Ti, a quite strong card, good enough for me at the time, ran Bf3 just fine. And a 1.5Tb HDD, plenty of room, at the time. Of the course of those 4 years I've added some custom parts, 4Gb of extra ram, since 6Gb just was too little, and 8Gb also wouldn't have been enough. The Gtx 550Ti has been replaced by a Twin Froze GTX 660, which currently still manages to run many games at about medium/high/ultra settings. And I've added a 120Gb SSD, since a HDD is too slow. The only 2 real problems I have with it is that it has a piece of **** OEM Mono (a Pegatron one) and that CPU is simply too weak for me, it runs games well, but when I am multitasking it runs at a solid 40% load at about 60C

 

I hope to build a complete system somewhere in 2015.

my Grandpa uses one of those Slims and he refuses to get a new one. Its a goner. It runs loud and hot, around 10c from TJ Max. The HDD  is on its last legs, when you start it up your can hear it make all kinds of bad noises!

Yeah that thing is a dust magnet and doesn't have good airflow at all. I had to clean it quite a few times.

I remember that thing fondly. Had dual monitor setup back in 2005 (due to a shipping error) and an X1300 Radeon card.

 

I was stupid and killed it by trying to install a hard drive without turning it off.

 

I was even more stupid by tearing into it, destroying it, before even confirming it was destroyed. I remeber after a system ruining spark, the only light on the tower was a flashing amber light. Looking back, that computer was possibly salvagable. Maybe a CMOS reset or something might have fixed that.
