Big Build Log Contest Showdown - Voting Thread

Featured Build Logs - The Big Event - Voting

OK folks, this is the voting thread for the big Featured Build Logs
competition, the submission thread can be found here.

NOTE: You can vote for more than one build!
NOTE 2: Due to IPB restrictions you must make one choice for both questions of the poll. If you do not wish to vote for somebody in one of the questions, select the DUMMY CHOICE. Sorry about that.

Eliminated Builds

Submissions in violation of any of these rules, or which did not
adhere to the template
, are not eligible for voting and will therefore
not be making an appearance in this thread.

1 - Only submit your own build log. You cannot submit if you have won in the past three months (since this is a special one-off version of the contest, we may show some leniency on this one).
2 - Your build must be completed. Do not submit "In Progress" builds.
3 - Description cap of 200 words.
4 - Do not include specs, please have a detailed list of specs in your actual Build Log thread.

Additionally, we reserve the right to not accept submissions for
other reasons.

It should now also be clear why we want the username in your post
submission, otherwise attributing builds in the voting thread
becomes more or less impossible. ;)

Build Title: LekroNAS: 16TB gigabit-saturating network-attached storage using FreeNAS

Thread URL: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/167913-

Description: In no way aesthetically pleasing or gaming-oriented, LekroNAS stores massive swaths of data in one convenient, network-attached device accessible from anywhere desired. The LekroNAS uses server-grade components to provide a true server experience and allow for ZFS arrays up to 32TB in size, at a price significantly lesser than prebuilt NAS devices with similar capabilities.

Build Title: APOLLO

Thread URL : http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/75887-apollo-2-cpu-lga1366-server-inwin-pp689-by-alpenwasser/

Description : OK, OK, I know, it's not the prettiest thing in the world. It doesn't even have a painted interior! But still, there's lots of goodness here I think. Cable management! Completely custom drive bays with place for tons of HDDs! Dual CPUs! Loads of fans! But yes, of course this build is about functionality above all else. In any case (huehue), for those who don't know it yet, it's our new home server, used for my personal files, my dad's business data and our media library (and some experimentation with virtual machines). Currently at 29 TB raw storage capacity, it still has 11 free HDD bays at the moment for expansion. I needed a case with space for lots of HDDs for future expandability, but didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on hotswap cages, so I took out the stock drive assembly and made a completely custom one with the awesome help from one of our neighbours.

More info in build log, for those who are into that sort of thing. :)

Thread URL: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/11759-saber-a-2011-build/?hl=saber

Description: To this day, Saber runs on the reliable Core i7 2600K CPU under that MASSIVE V10! The PSU has been downgraded from 1200W to 1000W when these pictures were taken because Cooler Master couldn't replace a simple fan under warranty in an otherwise healthy unit.... but, I'll save that rant for another day. Future upgrades include an SSD for the main OS when 1TB SSD's are within reasonable price range... almost there as of August 2014, but not quite. Other than the PSU switch, Saber is still the same as in this picture.

Build Title: Model 01

Thread URL: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/49076-model-01-a-scratch-built-chassis-finally-done/

Description: A scratch built chassis designed and built by me. Built in 3 mm aluminium sheets. The basic goal was to design a very quiet high-performing system with a minimalistic and clean design. And that meant water cooling. Since no chassis really had what I wanted I went "full retard" and started this project. It started back in 2008 and laid idle from time to time (with most work being done 2012-2013) but in February 2014 it was finally completed! Weighs about 15kg w/o HW and >35kg with all the HW. Basically, its a tank and a PITA to move. Well over a 1000 hours have gone into planing, learning programs, building, modding, documenting, taking photos etc. If I knew back then how much time and effort I would have to put down I would never have started. Many ups and downs, and I nearly gave up several times. But in the end it was ALL worth it! :)

Cheers and GL to everyone!

Build Title: The Vector

Thread URL: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/196364-the-vector/

Description:

I'm Adam, and I'm 14 :D

This is my brand new AWESOME gaming PC that I built a few weeks ago. The build went without a hitch and I'm loving this thing so far. My PCPartPicker has all the parts I used and prices and stuffs:

http://pcpartpicker.com/b/xv6XsY

Future Upgrades:

I want to do some future upgrades, like throwing in an NZXT Kraken G10 to water cool my GPU and a 240mm rad for my CPU. Will also be upgrading 2 or so years from now to a newer Intel i7 chip and hopefully a GTX 980 (when that comes out)

Also will be hackintoshing when Yosemite comes out later this year.

Conclusion:

I love my new PC and can't wait to get started playing all those games I've really been wanting to play. I think it's really good for my first build and am excited to join the PC Master Race with this thing.

The centre piece is made from burl vavona wood that has been French polished. It was so much fun to make as I'm not used to working at this scale (the NUC is tiny!),

You can't see it in the picture but if you go to my build log I have some pictures of the red LED underglow behind the motherboard. The camera doesn't capture it well but in person it looks great!

Build Title: Ice Pack

Thread URL: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/206110-ice-pack-h440-r9-290x/

Description: This build is for a friend who has been gaming on an old laptop since Aug 2011 and before that, an even more ancient desktop. That's where the name of this build comes from: his laptop would overheat and artifact and in order to get back in the game, he'd toss an ice pack under it and wait for it to cool down. This is a huge step up for him so to add icing to the cake, I made sure to get a case with a big window and I routed all the cables as nicely as I could. I think the interior looks really neat and it makes for an awesome looking/performing first gaming PC.

It was pretty funny, and mind challeing, why? Because of the space how should I put it, should I put the cpu faced up or down? And more stuff. Sooo, does this count?

:)Cheers and GL to everyone!

Forum ID: AdamthegeekBuild Title: The VectorThread URL: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/196364-the-vector/Description:I'm Adam, and I'm 14 :DThis is my brand new AWESOME gaming PC that I built a few weeks ago. Fixed. Basically, I put each entry in a spoiler with the name of the entry as the title. That many images is painful. Please copy/paste accordingly. There was also some weird font/color/size tags in there that weren't applying. Probably due to copy/paste. I removed them and it didn't change the appearance.

Alrighty.

I appreciate the effort, but it'll stay as-is. I might be able to reduce

the image sizes though, give me an hour or so.

Great builds throughout, chose 8 this time!

Yup, had some good entries. :)

Some stiff competition going on here. That Model 01 is especially beautiful. If Loramentum was ready that'd gotten my vote also.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

OK, I've resized all images to a maximum width of 600 pixels, I think

that should be enough to keep this usable while still showing enough

to give people a good impression of what the build is about. My laptop

is a pretty old and slow machine, and it works OK for me at this resolution

(i.e. the PC doesn't start to stutter or similar).

OK, about the poll thing: I've added a dummy choice to each question,

so if you want to vote, but only want to vote for someobdy in one

of the sections, you can select the dummy choice in the other question.

Well it's all down to preference remember. For me, I could never vote for it as it's simply too in your face and gaudy for my liking, way too much UV green. To be honest, I feel the same way as you about Model 01, the finish and execution are unparalleled, not to mention the design and thought that went into it.

Dont talk about design and thought when you're comparing a chassis to a custom made desk. Yes the Model 01 is beautiful and any other month it would have won, but the custom desk just blows it to smithereens.

That doesn't make any sense though? When you distill the two projects down, both Model 01 and Imfaceroll's desk are the same thing, an enclosure with stuff inside. Sure a desk has legs and a surface, but it's also much bigger, which is easier to work with. They both have their merits. The desk is balls to the walls crazy, and Model 01 is reserved and beautifully engineered. My preference is for Model 01 as I'm bored of crazy.

Remember that Model 01 is a completely custom made, scratch built case, not an off the shelf piece with a nice mod in it. That's why I'm so impressed by it, it could fool almost anybody into thinking it was made by a professional case manufacturer and that the insides are the only special part. The desk looks great (if you're into UV green that is) but still comes across as a well built DIY project.
