I'll spare any newbie too lazy to read.

 

Generally speaking, a single GPU set up, even on the high end, all you'd need is roughly the 500-650w range of PSU (a solid 550w is plenty for the majority of single gpu high end set ups - 430w is fine for mid range/office PCs). For high end SLI/Crossfire, a well built 850w unit will do. For more than 2 GPUs, you are entering the 1kw+ range with very little returns in power, but hey, if you like wasting cash for no real benefit, be my guest.

 

It bothers me people still believe they need a 1kw PSU for a GTX 780/290X. (or the equivalent high end GPU at the time)

 

lol. I originally planed to put what you said on there, but it would have been too broad as there's many types of single GPU and dual GPU setups. 

 

I guess it's better to overestimate then to underestimate on power supplies. The only 1000W on there would be putting two GPUs in there and overclocking both GPUS as well as the GPU. In this situation you're pulling as much as 900 watts, but as there's not really a 900W PSU, just 850 then straight to 1000.

My recommendation for a simpler Wattage estimate reference would be:

 

Look up the CPU and GPU/s TDP. It's often stated on their website. Add them together. (Ignore the recommended power supply Wattage. Consider only the GPU and CPU Wattages themselves). And then add 100W or so for HDDs, RAM, fans, and any other little things. These often don't use much. Remember, just because your GTX 780 has a 250W TDP, doesn't mean it will always use 250W. Most of the time your CPU and GPU won't be running at 100% load simultaneously, so the total power draw will be lower.

For example: Intel i7 4770k has an 84W TDP, EVGA GTX 780 has a TDP of 250W. 84 + 250 = 334W. Most systems with a 4770k and GTX 780 can run on 430W or so.

 

And something about overclocking power consumption.

 

This doesn't tell you what power supply to buy. Not all power supplies are equal. There is more to the power supply than the brand or manufacturer. To get an idea of how good a power supply is, you can read reviews or simply make a thread and ask us. If you do make a thread asking for suggestions, remember to include your location (country is fine), preferred store or retailer, budget, and any other preferences. When reading reviews, remember that they often vary depending on the test software they used, the different hardware they used, whether they overclocked both CPU and GPU, and how they measured the power. Reading multiple reviews is a good idea.

hmm...so for a 4670k and 660ti / 870 or 880 (with mobo, ram, hdd, ssd, cpu heatsink obviously) id get away with the 450w right? id probably have a little less than 100 watts to spare.

I'm not sure if I wanna pay double the cost of a ST45SF (450watt PSU) for the bigger SX600G (600watt PSU), could use that for the gpu upgrade. 

Bbbbbbuuuttttt someone fit a 4770k, H220, and a 780 lightning with the 450 watt so i should be fine rite m8?

Yep. At stock clocks you can squeeze a 780 and a 4670k off of the ST45SF, it's quite the little PSU. An 880 if based on Maxwell is going to be way more efficient, you'll have no problems with the Silverstone.

How about a Raidmax Rx 1000ae? It says it has 36amps on the 12v rail

As far as overall quality it's nothing to write home about, but it's still a good power supply nonetheless. Will deliver all 1000W with good voltage regulation and decent ripple suppression. However the lower efficiency and 1 year warranty are things to consider.

Nobody is sure yet. The 870 may be based off of Maxwell, however it wouldn't be a surprise to see it be just a rebrand of the 780.

I was about to ask what kind of PoS 1000W unit has 36 amps on a 12V rail, but it's actually a quad rail with 36 amps on each. Combined 75A, 900W. Still, not an impressive 1000W by a long stretch. You can do much better.

As quan289 pointed out not long ago, Raidmax sent in a Gold unit to be 80Plus tested and certified as Gold, and then sold Bronze units with the Gold label.

Might I suggest putting a summary in a spoiler with something like what mooshi said. I mean a detailed explanation is nice but a general guideline should be fine for most.

Honestly I would rather buy a diablotek over the CX. There are better option, CX is one of the worst you can go with.

OC i5, OC 2 780s, you're gonna need a 750w, 1000w is enough, but you're leaving alot of headroom(which isn't always good).

Well your numbers are a bit wrong.

 

For a high end setup with a single gpu, you don't need much more than a gold rated 450w psu. 550w is in a wierd spot, it leaves headroom for a single gpu setup, but not enough room for a dual gpu setup.

well im getting an EVGA 850w G2 for a second 290(eventually) and pretty much everyone says thats fine. probs no OC though. Alot of people greatly over estimate the wattage needed e.g. me a while ago :P

You'll be able to do a bit of OCing with two 290s on an 850G2, just nothing extreme.

Im not really an extreme OCer anyway. on my cpu on just go to where ever i don't have to adjust voltage :P Also when i get a new cpu it will probably use less power as that is the way of the world atm :P
