Wow this is funny. I was coming in here to show off the Yotsubato! manga I just got from Japan. I love the characters and it's nice kind of easier reading to practice my Japanese. Only read the first volume so far but I was dying when Jumbo introduced himself to Fuuka and family and they were shocked one by one by how ridiculously big he is. Also LOL when he tells Fuuka's dad that his ancestors were giraffes.

Of course now I come to find out Yotsubato! Volume 15 just released about two weeks ago so I need that one too to get the full set. Hopefully by the time I read Volumes 2-14 it won't be $30 to import. Ugh I wish I could get these for 600 yen like people can in Japan.

What's also cool is I bought that Yotsubato! set advertised as used but they look absolutely brand new, like I don't know how you'd read something and not get a little dirt on it. I mean used stuff from Japan always comes in really nice shape but I wasn't expecting brand new. Also came with a free copy of a shojo manga I have never heard of called Hachimitsu to Kuroba (Honey and Clover) and a packet of green tea.

Nice!

I got this exact one about 1,5 years ago and I really love it! To me it is so comfy and stable, that I fallen asleep on it many times in the lowest position haha 😄

Just be a little careful to the fake skin, after hard usage for a year, it started falling appart very slightly (tho it is really a slow process and does not spread quickly even when already there, so just an advice 🙂 )

What volume is the English at right now? Volume 15 in Japan is the first one released in like 3 years I think. Yotsuba is super popular in the Japanese language learning community because it's one of the easier manga to get into (someone JLPT N3 level can read it pretty easily) while also being really funny and engaging and telling interesting stories.

Also have you heard of a site called bilingualmanga? If you don't mind reading on your PC / phone / tablet, it has a lot of manga you can read in both Japanese and English for free. It has the first four volumes of Yotsuba and most of volume 5, for example:

Got it right before uni started last summer. My budget was 1000 usd but i actually mannaged to get it for 700 usd.

Love the 16:10 1600p screen, main reason i got it. The extra vertical space makes a huge difference. Its very quiet (im picky) and very good battery life. However the 3550H does not impress, still a decent ugrade from my 5010u, but its more than enough power for what i use it for anyway.

I knew that already after reading "API" as the device's name.

What do you use it for?

Basic work/uni stuff, word, excel and browsing 99% of the time. Thats why i compromised on the cpu for the screen. Im very surprised that the 35w cpu keeps it turbo under sustained load. Id say the biggest bottleneck by far is the vega 8 integrated graphics.

Oh ye, the like last 3 volumes have taken litteral years to come out in japan. idk why its taking so long, i hope he isnt losing interest bc i would really hate to see the manga end. Oh wow, i didn't know that, thats actually super interesting. I really wanna learn japenese if i visit japan (weeb mode) but i hear its super hard. Are u native, or learning? I wish I was native. I could speak it a little when I was really really young but my Japanese grandmother died when I was 6 and I had no exposure to the language after that for many years, so forgot literally everything.

It's pretty hard for a native English speaker. Context is super important to spoken Japanese, as subjects are usually omitted, topics too. Japanese grammar doesn't really depend on word order, instead you have these things called particles that bind to words to indicate things like topic, subject, or object. Only thing that's critical is the verb has to come at the end.

The written language is a mess too, largely stemming from Japan just stapling China's writing system onto their own language. And while hanzi is elegant as hell for Chinese languages, kanji is a kludge for Japanese since sometimes you have to use a Japanese derived reading, but if it's a Chinese loanword you have to use a reading derived from how a Chinese dialect pronounced the symbol 1000 years ago. For instance, 新 is a kanji meaning new but if I say 新しい車 = atarashii kuruma = new car I use that Japanese derived reading atara for 新. But if I say 新型コロナウイルス = shingata korona uirusu = novel coronavirus I have to use the Chinese derived reading shin for 新 since 新型 is a loanword from Chinese. Also the Chinese readings can often be inferred from subsymbols in a kanji, but the Japanese readings never can. It's a mess when you get symbols like 上 which can be read ue for up or top, jou for top or best, uwa for above or top, etc.

Still, speaking and listening has to be worlds easier than Chinese languages which have tones. Japanese has pitch accent where some syllables are pronounced at a higher pitch others lower, which can help distinguish say 箸 = hashi = chopsticks vs 橋 = hashi = bridge, but you don't need to know it to be understood (you'll just have an accent if you get it wrong). But way less complicated than all the tones you have to know in Chinese languages probably.

If you're ever interested in starting the language, the Genki textbooks are decent. I used those two then moved on to Tobira before just focusing on native material meant for Japanese people now. By the time you finish the second Genki textbook you'd be alright to start reading stuff like Yotsuba or NHK Easy News. It'll be a fucking grind at first no matter how many textbooks you study but eventually you'll start to get more used to reading, just have to keep beating it into your head as ridiculously hard as it is at first. Also the anki virtual flashcard program is a godsend for studying Japanese.
