I purchased a ThinkPad T430 for $100, but was sent a Latitude 5591. After letting the seller know of their mistake, they told me that I could keep it.

The laptop has:

Core i5 8400H vPro

Intel UHD 630/nVidia MX130

250 GB NVMe SSD

1080p IPS display

SIM slot, but no 4G card

8GB of DDR4 (ordered more)

Thunderbolt 3 (it was optional, and this one has it)

Needless to say, I'm ecstatic. Updated the BIOS and it wouldn't boot, but I got a code that I looked up. It said it could be fixed by disconnecting the battery and removing and re-inserting the RAM. I'm typing this on the laptop in question, so, as you can see, it worked.

Trackpad is a bit odd, but the rest of the package is so great that I could overlook it, even if paying full MSRP. The same goes for the dumb design decision where if you use the NVMe slot, you can't use a 2.5" drive. I'll buy an SSD for the second, smaller slot if I need more storage.

The battery life isn't great, but for what this laptop is, it's fine. Again, it being $100 basically makes the machine flawless to me, but it'd still be fine if I paid MSRP. The laptop was apparently built last year, and has 2 more years left of a basic warranty.

I'll make a review in the "member reviews" fourm after I use it for a couple weeks.

It catches fingerprints quite easily, but I'm especially bad with getting fingerprints on things, so it's exaggerated here.

I need a new laptop but cheaply, how do I downvote this post?!? I'm lucky to have this first gen dual core i5 LOL!

I know what it means. I was just seeing an opportunity for a really cheap joke.

I haven't actually tried using it as a pre-amp yet. I just have it hooked d up to my headphone amplifier and I use that to control the volume. I have had quite a few problems with amplifiers reacting weirdly to being feed anything less than a line-level signal.

I know the M51 is doing digital volume control, so that shouldn't be an issue, but I guess old habits die hard.

Yeah a Headphone Amplifier might be a bit funny with being fed a different signal than it likes, especially with amps like the THX AAA 789 that tend to sound awful with a high-level signal.

I'm fairly sure the M51 was meant to be used as a pre-amp to feed a pair of power amplifiers for speakers, as they have no issues with incoming signal levels fluctuating heavily. Would also make sense as NAD makes a bunch of power amplifiers.

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

You can find T430s for decently cheap, like I did! They're still great laptops, and you may be able to find one with an SSD!

Meh, need 15.6 cause I'm a picky beggar lol.

Then might I recommend the T530?

You might recommend it, I'll check it out. I've been focusing on Dell because my last few reliable ones have been Dell and their documentation and ebay parts availability is superb.

It said it could be fixed by disconnecting the battery and removing and re-inserting the RAM. I'm typing this on the laptop in question, so, as you can see, it worked.

The track nub is pretty sensitive and stiff, scrolling with it and the top middle trackpad button* is really bad (too sensitive/fast). Reminds me of the sensitivity of my D630, but I can't check scroll accuracy on that because it lacks a middle trackpad button on the top or bottom.

Trackpad is also bit odd, but the rest of the package is so great that I could overlook these things, even if paying full MSRP. *I highlighted the button in question in case somebody doesn't understand what I mean.

If you want to add a LTE modem you can buy a Sierra Wireless M.2 card off eBay for $150 ish. I actually bought two for a little project of mine. They work amazing assuming your laptop doesn’t have a BIOS whitelist for them.

Thanks for the reccomendation! I'm probably going to stick an SSD in that slot sometimes in the future (not looking to spend more money rn). I'll definitely take a look at those if I decide I want 4G, though.

Speaking of 4G cards, do you think this could work? My laptop has a SIM slot already, just no card.

While it will work, I can't recommend it. I think that card is limited to HSPA. The EM7565 is LTE cat-12. I personally use a prepaid T-Mobile sim while traveling and love it. I can typically pull 100+mbps download with it.

Oh crap, just noticed that.

This says it's for ThinkPads, but it uses the WWAN slot. Would it work?

That is a much better option and should work perfectly. Make sure you have the Windows drivers pre-installed from either Lenovo or Sierra wireless website before installing.

Did someone say $8 for a working PlayStation 2, accessories not included? Because I did.

image0.jpg

Tested a CD game, Driving Emotion Type-S; that worked perfectly, video playback included. Tested a DVD game, Fantavision; that also worked perfectly. Now I gotta give it the cleaning it deserves.

It's an SCPH-39001 model, if anyone cares. It's not quiet by any means but by god, it works as intended.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!
