Weight - 8.6 lbs. (3.9 kg.)

Dimensions - 17″: 1.61″ × 16.46″ × 11.63″ (40.9 × 418.1 × 295.4mm)

Model - serw11

I also ordered an extra battery and PSU.

This thing is a boat anchor and is built like a brick outhouse! The brick PSU is close to the size and weight of an actual brick (it runs cool, though). The screen is the best I've ever seen on a laptop.

I had one heckuva time installing Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 due to the NVIDIA graphics card since Mint doesn't have preinstalled NVIDIA drivers so I had "fun" getting a display so I could install the drivers. System 76 left out a few details when I asked for help so I had to do a lot research on the interwebz and do a lot of trial and error (mostly the latter) before I finally figured out how to get it installed.

It came with a 250GB Samsung 970 EVO with Ubuntu installed (my other choices were two versions of POP OS) but I yanked that an replaced it with a 512GB 970 Pro to install Linux on, keeping the EVO for a fall back drive it I wasn't able to get Mint installed. There is room for a second M.2 drive but I doubt I ever will.

Installing the 4TB Samsung 860 Pro was a nightmare. The service manual had directions for installing an M.2 drive (like I needed any) but didn't have directions on how to install a 2.5" drive (mutter, mutter, mumble, mumble). The computer came with a bag of parts for installing the drives (there is room for two 2.5" drives but I doubt I'll ever install more than one). I was able to figure out the hold down bracket but the other two parts were a bit more of a mystery. I found out what one was for after calling System 76 (they don't make the computer; they sell a rebranded one they order built to their specs) but they were stumped by the other one. I finally found out searching on the "interwebz" (you gotta love Bushisms) where I found a video that showed an installed drive.

One I first got it, I looked for over half an hour for the power switch. It's in a prominent location but, between the unusual shape and the lighting in the room (it's actually bright in here), I just couldn't see it. Now that I know where it is, it's not a problem and is easy to use.

The battery is not particularly large since this such a powerful machine. At best, I'll probably get only 2 hours of life out of it, depending on what I'm doing with it so it will be more like a UPS when on the road (I may take the battery out at home and depend on an actual UPS I already have in the room). Due to its weight, it's not really intended to be carried around a lot. I normally had my notebooks connected to AC all the time so this isn't going to be a problem for me.

The extra PSU will be handy for when I go out of town (not anytime soon, obviously; stupid Corona virus). I can keep one out of the way under or behind my desk for regular use and the other one can stay in the computer's bag. That way, I won't have to dig the PSU out from under and or behind my desk so I can take it with me when I hit the road. I got the extra battery so, if System 76 no longer sells them when the battery dies, I'll still have one.

Despite the "fun" I had at first, I'm pretty sure I'm going to love this computer. Even though the keyboard is a chiclet keyboard, it's the best one I've ever used. The keys are backlit and has multiple colors plus brightness controls. The screen is one of the best I've ever seen, if not the best (there was also a 4k option but I didn't need that). It's got the power of a desktop and has plenty of room for storage expansion should I ever need it. If I ever need it, I can expand the RAM to 64GB.

I'll be spending the next few days installing programs and transferring data to it before it becomes my daily driver. I still need to get a bag for it and replace my spare 4TB SSD I installed in the computer. I already have a couple of wireless mice I can use with it.

So the publisher, Planet Entertainment, was selling off remaining stock of Cooking Mama Cookstar.  I took advantage of this.

I figure I'll give a quick synopsis behind the controversy of this game, as a lot of people still think it was doing something along the lines of cryptocurrency mining.

  • It wasn't actually being used to mine with your Switch.  Data miners found this out.  The issue was, the game wasn't completed.  The devs, 1st Playable Productions, weren't done with the game.  They were still working on it.  PE decided, "nah, let's release it now, cause we can!"  So they did.  They released an unfinished game on the Switch and all that.  The game causes the switch to overheat and fan to ramp up super loud, cause it's just a shitty coded game, because it wasn't done.  1st Playable told PE to take the game down, and stop selling physical copies, to which PE told them no.  Well, while PE has exclusive distribution rights to Cooking Mama, 1st Playable basically wholly owns the IP.  So they called Nintendo and had Nintendo cease cartridge production and pull it from the eshop.  Then, they're now taking PE to court over it.  This caused many people to think this possibly might cause this game to become one of the rarest Switch games out there.. outside of artificially rare games as I call them, from companies like Limited Run and Super Rare, where they purposefully only make "like maybe 1000 copies of a game at most."  I decided to grab it, mainly was going to originally grab it to check out a cooking mama game anyways, but I'm holding onto it now in case it does become rare.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Deluxe Edition... the box is soft touch.  The attention to detail is great.  The game itself so far is amazing.  I'm like on chapter 10 or 11 and loving every minute of it.  It's such a well done remake.  The best way to describe the game is.. it has that "90s feel."  Weird way to describe it.  It feels modern and new.  Like the controls are solid.  The graphics, amazing.  Sound design, great.  But the vibe it gives off is that "90s feel."   It's in a good way too.

The next three I got were during Target's "B2G1" video game sale.  Gran Turismo was the free game.  I had a $20 gift card with Target, so I essentially got Spider-Man free as well.

Next purchase I get will probably be a 2018 iPad Pro (when more come in stock on Apple's refurbished website) for drawing.  That or a Ruger AR-556

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

Managed to bend the three pole 3.5mm connector on my HHD598c's. Thankfully it didnt break off IN my headphone jack...... that would have been the worst.

I've owned like 6 Sennheiser headphones, so the aftermarket HD518 cable plug in exactly the same (has the locking end on the headphone side) even if it doesnt have the same functionality as the 598c's cable. Gonna try out this braided cable though.

Decided to yoink an expired sample plate for the purposes of being able to show the back of my car without having to blur out my actual license plate. No, I won't drive with it.

Oh, that extra 8GB of RAM has been a perfect addition for my laptop, too. Decided to try the Forza Horizon 4 demo and, to my shock, it actually could BARELY squeeze out 720p at ~20-30fps.

Another dose of retro with one being brand new and the other being a lot cheaper then getting the region specific version in the same condition (and surprisingly had three of the four save slots used).

It makes me worry about the future. A lot of content will simply disappear out of neglect and lack of profitability. And the only way to access that content is through pirating. Because people who pirate care the most of the content and want to share it with the world. The publishers who have every right to distribute the content don't do so unless it's profitable.

I only realized this because I was watching Dawson's Creek on Netflix and I couldn't even finish the show before it got removed from the service.

In the age of more stringent piracy laws and restricted access through subscription services, a lot of content will just fade away and disappear. This has a lot of ramifications about the quality of the content and what sells and what doesn't. But that's a huge can worms. Anyhow, pirating is a means of benevolently archiving content. So I support pirating to the max. And I don't want 2, maybe 4 streaming services (like Spotify) dictate what I should consume.

My latest purchase(s) were to upgrade my audio for my computer.

Bought some studio monitors (Mackie CR3), a SybaSonic USB DAC/Amp, Sennheiser HD 559 Headphones).
I also decided to treat myself to yet another monitor (or an upgrade I should say) from a budget 1080p 24" TN monitor to a still "budget" monitor from Samsung - a 27" 1080p IPS.
I decided to re-purpose an old desk to make the speaker shelves rather than buy new ones (I love to do stuff like that if I have the material laying around).

I also need to redecorate - haven't supported Manchest United (Or football in general) for like 13 years.

Picture in spoiler.

New DAC, who dis?

IMG_20200426_142918.thumb.jpg.9adc3d73e5370f086b942772f71ac0a2.jpg

Found a NAD M51 for a really good price on the used market.

For anyone that knows their audio, this is a pretty (in)famous DAC. It basically takes PCM signals and converts and upsamples them to PWM prior to the final conversion to analog. It's a baffling design decision, but I'm curious as to how it'll measure.

It was rather difficult to take this picture. This weigh in on the better side of 12lb.

It's also rather funny that it says "digital DAC" on the front. As opposed to all those analog DACs out there.

Totally forgot to post this. I put down a deposite for the Privateer 161 in the raw finish, because I love the raw alu look. I did it about one month ago, so I luckily only have to wait until the end of the next month for it and not until September like if I were to buy it now.

Bought a sub to Astiga to listen to my music collection through the cloud (~400GB). Spotify is lacking so much stuff.

Why not Plex? Then you can access your videos and music. Or you'd rather not have a server on at all times and using bandwidth?

I've thought of some other services, but my Plex fills gaps in Netflix and Prime video, and my Plex fills in other gaps for Spotify.
