Motherboard caught fire but still works

Hi there,

Thought I would just share a little something that happened a few years ago...

I was refurbishing an old desktop of mine... Gigabyte (I forgot which model) mobo, Intel P4, 128MB DDR1 800MHz RAM, 40GB IDE HDD, everything else generic... As I was putting it together, I forgot to use standoffs (it used plastic standoffs which I had to cut in disassembly)... After putting it together, I turned it on, and it did, but smelled funny... I looked in the case and the bloody thing was on fire... I pulled the plug and stopped for the day, thinking that the mobo was dead... I went to buy some rubber washers later that day and reassembled the system... Plugged it in and to my surprise, she's still alive and kicking and is still being used as something like an internet only kiosk to this very day...

So there's mine...

Any other stories like this?

pics or it didnt happen

Wait for a bit (few days)... It's at my cousin's house... The pic would most likely show the burnt spot near the PCI slots...

Sounds like bullcrap.

Well, yeah. It could be. I would love to see a pic of the fire in the case on the mobo. :D

To demonstrate that the mobo did actually catch on fire, could you put a match to that thing and then take a pic? :P (JK)

Sorry for the late update... A storm blew through the country and knocked out power and communications for a few days... But here are the pics as promised... I can't get it to turn on because the power is still out at my cousin's house, but I'm confident that it still works...

Mobo in question:

It's an old Gigabyte (Pentium 4, DDR1, IDE, AGP). Pardon the cable management on the right...

Burned spot at the back

Those are the USB headers, I think...

This PC accompanied me in the last few years of elementary and the first half of high school before being entrusted to my cousin until the day it surrenders... It's still going strong today...

P.S.

Sorry for the crap photos... It's the best camera that I have on hand... (the other being a 35mm film camera)...
