I can't tell if this is a rusty metal pan or a galaxy, but I like it. Would be a little better with either more contrast or vibrancy I think. 8/10

Hopefully this doesn't go against the no politics rule.. buuuuuuut
Here is my favorite photo I took turning the BLM protests in 2020. Its of police tear gassing the local journalists. Wish I should have gotten better photos, but turns out its hard to compose a shot when police are shooting tear gas at you. Who knew?

I really like the shot, the composition is great and easily conveys a lot movement, and emotion. 10/10.

Recipe for some product photography right there.

I don't take my Rokinon/Samyang 50mm F1.4 out very much nowadays, owing to size, primitive AF, practicality and image quality issues, but for the occasion when I want some nice bokeh, this lens absolutely delivers, and overall, has kind of a soft analog feel to it. Wish I had a better subject though. 😝 Not a great photo, just felt like taking it to the backyard. Just wondering what I can do with it that can make use of it's strengths. I've a friend having her 30th birthday soon, so perhaps some shots (photo shots, not alcomohols) taken at a bar would be a perfect job for this lens.

Yeah, definitely. I’d seen some artistic ways to use lenses like this, so I’m just figuring that out a bit. I definitely like the bokeh at F1.4. It’s a bit like if you took Bob Ross’s soul, and violently shoved it into a lens. 😄It’s just finding an application that’s challenging. Providing that beautiful blur, but also not leave the subject wanting for more focus. It’s a fine balance act it seems.

I’ve an idea though I’ll try tomorrow.

theres a place for shallow depth of field and lots of bokeh. your use here is tasteful unlikely man

I've found hand held about 1/12 to 1/15 of a second is as slow as I can go without shakes. some of the people with steadier hands can get it down to 1/8

This was taken on my mom's iPhone 12 Mini, but it's zoomed in a lot to avoid disclosing my location.

It was snowing at the time and the view looked pretty.

Without poking at the EXIF data, when do you think this picture was taken?

Image stabilization works wonders.

See that's like me, I can at least get it down to 1/8 of second for a shot, but the probability of it happening every time is pretty slim. I'd have to take multiple shots to try and get a decently sharp photo at those shutter speeds.

You know, I thought my photo above was kind of a bit 💩, but today, it’s kind of growing on my a bit. The way the colors blend in the background is quite nice.

Probably could’ve used a bit more depth of field, but tbh, this lens is also just really soft wide-open. Even areas “in-focus” will not look tack sharp. F2.8 is where sharpness kind of picks up (which is one reason I find this lens not super practical vs my Sony 85mm F1.8, or Samyang 35mm F2.8). I really like the rendering of this lens, (which is why I hadn’t sold it) and light transmission is fantastic (beating even the 50mm F1.4 GM), it’s just kind of a niche lens for me.

About exactly 12 hours off. This was shortly after midnight.

It was snowing quite a bit and so the light from the nearby streetlight + low light mode lit up the scene quite a lot

Ok, so I never knew what people were talking about in terms of artifacts until now. That image (Mercedes AMG) was taken at 4032 x 3024, and looking at the roof, I see weird grey squiggles that definitely weren't there in the original. If you want the full res image, just ask, as well as tell me what website I should use for full size image uploading, if possible.

You’re probably uploading from the iPhone, so it’s not straightforward. You need to put the image to Files, and then select the file from there (select Choose Files instead of Photo). Otherwise, the iPhone will force a lower quality for the upload. My example was uploaded from my iPhone.

The colors and lighting actually look good. ususally a shot like this, the dog would be too dark and the background be too bright, but its a good balance.
