Welp, the winners of the Project Ara beta testing get to have the phone for free. It should have been ME. It said that Ara may come out in March 2015. What do you guys think of Project Ara?

I am not going to buy one, I like sleek phones with everything sealed into a smooth exterior. (battery cover coming off is nice)

Yeah, but's it's the first FULLY modular phone. And people thought the Moto X was customizable.

my needs in phones is kinda weird(not rly but i m not the most representative customer) so ara makes sense.

i need a decent ish processor, nothing fancy, a 720p screen to conserve battery , don t need a camera,

and the biggest battery ever.

i don t mind a 1in thick phone if it meant more battery life...

no manufacturer in their right mind would design a phone for me but if i could...

I'd buy a modular phone when my contract expires, especially if you can move it to new carriers by switching out an "antenna" module. It would probably cost a lot more up-front than a mass-produced phone with similar specs, but upgrading just individual parts when needed would probably save money eventually, and replacing one component if it gets damaged would be way cheaper than getting a whole new phone. Depends on the final implementation though.

Getting into the beta would have been nice, but since I didn't know there WAS a beta and never signed up for it, I can't be too mad or disappointed.

Really? All they've done is make the connections on the pcb like headers?

Really? All they've done is make the connections on the pcb like headers?

not they did not,

they had to design each small pcb (and tool for) that would usually be contained inside a big one.

That implies some components will be copied to each modules that normally wouldn t be here and yet it is decently small.

then there s the problem of heat dissipation in each module, like it or not, 1 big heatsink is better than lots of small one contained in plastic(isolant) so yes cooling the phone will be a challenge.

then they have to tool for (aka make the mold/set the machines) the production of the phones's core , and each individual module.

all that takes time.

Not interested in this project at all. I don't see it being a viable alternative, nor do I see it gaining the ground it needs to actually take off.

As for the device itself, I find it's rather ugly. Especially the front. If they find a way to make the entire front screen, without that awful module at the top, I might consider it.

On top of all that, the Chief Designer has left the project. That sort of tells you something.

It doesn't have to be mind blowingly different to be innovative. No one else offered the service. I think it's an awesome idea, and quite frankly it would make me pick Moto over someone else.

I love being able to have something designed the way I'd like.

Why don't you just buy a device that has the extended battery available? Problem solved.

Now it's like Project Ara is like a computer. You can swap out parts, make it faster, etc.

It's just a bad idea. Modular stuff will never be as compact as custom designed stuff and it matters a lot for phones.

I like the idea to be able to customize all the parts but for sure they're going to be pretty hard to find/buy, and I just don't like the way that their prototype looks. We'll more likely need to wait a few years until we'll have a great modular phone.

because it doesnt work that way,

the only phone that would be worth switching to is the note 3 WITH a zerolemon 10000mah battery

BUT it s 900$ and you re paying for useless things:

way too many pixels that drain battery

a useless camera.

project ara enables you to pay for things you need and save on things you dont.

my 300$ nexus 4 currently last about 5 hours before i have to charge it. i don t think any phone has the capacity to last me a day or two short of using an aftermarket battery.

I would totally get one. I just love anything modular, and being able to customize the hardware to your liking.

Unless there's a slide out keyboard like he desire Z not interested. It's not truly modular until they do something like that!
