Seagate barracuda 7200.14 1TB makes wierd noise

k0enf0rNL

whenever i start a program from the HDD it starts spinning until a certain point and then makes a loud grinding noise and then the noise stops. it has been doing this for the past 3 weeks. this drive is about 2 months old now.

What is causing this noise and should i be worried?

did you move the computer lately? It's most likely that the heads are grinding on the disk.

Did you bump it? Can you get a video or something of it so that we can hear it? I feel weird that my old WD1200BB is outliving so many new hard drives (although it is starting to get more bad sectors and its health is generally degrading now).

its a very bad sound clip but it just spins and then it makes this kind of noise:

i moved my pc like 2 months ago to build my lights in it. and the noise started only 3 weeks ago. i think after i just installed the new corsair link software. could it have something to do with it?

No the software has nothing to do with it, It's probably dying so back up all of your files and see if Seagate will replace it since it should still be under warranty.

Go back to the store and they will probably let you move it to the new one they give you, unless they are dicks and ignore the warranty.

i dont know bro, i mean you don't want to tear  it appart and see if somthing is loos, but if you got warranty, send it back, cause it's either Dying or broken

the customer support from my webshop said it can make that noise when I start something while its in standby mode. i use this drive for my games and movies. my OS is not on there so i dont use it all the time.
