Pentium @ 4.6ghz on stock cooler (Devil's Canyon FTW!)

DaMagicalManiac

This overclockable Pentium G3258 packs quite a punch for a price of $70.

http://www.digitalstormonline.com/unlocked/intel-pentium-g3258-review-and-overclocking-benchmarks-idnum298/

Apparently it can also render frames just as well on BF4 as the 4690k and the 4790k, although I somehow doubt their review and you should also note that the k series parts are at stock speeds.

http://blog.3xssystems.co.uk/

Unfortunately this Pentium does require a Z97 mobo (maybe a Z87 with an updated firmware) but if this is as good as the two articles above we may be able to shave some money instead of going with an entry-level i5.

Hopefully Linus (although Slick does the benchmarking) makes a video on this processor.

(also, nudge nudge, where's our 4690k and 4790k benchmarks Mr Linus?????)

EDIT: Moar benchmarks!

It did surprisingly well, alot better than I would have thought on Crysis 3 as it was only 2 frames behind the 4690k on water overclocked @ 4.6ghz.

However, unfortunately yet not surprisingly, the dual-core suffered in battlefield 4 due to the game demanding 4 threads.

Maybe (and hopefully) it's just a bottleneck because the other benchmarks for BF4 were tested on a gtx 770, this was tested on a 780 ti.

Oh man! New best budget CPU? Is AMD gonna loose the Budget throne?

The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Fox at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The RPS metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches.

Only Abate, Axe, and Wobbles can save us.

I think they might if its on-par with an i5 in games somehow then there is no reason to buy an FX 6300 really.

You're forgetting that this needs a mobo that is over $80.

$80(£50) isn't alot for a motherboard.

I'm really tempted to buy one. Home theatre PC? Maybe one for the parents... Would be a good system to throw one of my 760's into once the 880's come out...

Never say it's not broken. Everything is broken. Why? Because everything needs MOAR POWA!

Amazing, isn't it?

Yes. Please test Battefield 4, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV, Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3. Also chose a lower end GPU (like the GTX 760) for your benchmarks, so that it's not hitting the 62fps cap on AC IV - this game is very important for me.

I was wondering weather to get the Pentium or the i3 while I wait for Broadwell. And if the Pentium performs the same in games while overclocked, then I'll get it. Assassin's Creed IV is especially important for me because Unity is gonna be built on the same engine, and I do wanna play so badly, but I'm not willing to jump on the current gen i5s/i7s. I wanna wait for that 14nm greatness. You'll be helping me directly in my choice of CPU there (i3 or a Pentium). :)

I eagerly await Slick's review with a decent GPU and a updated Z87/Z97 board. If I can even get to 4.4 on my Z87 Sabertooth, that makes the pitiful investment for the Pentium worth everything.

Hell, I want to see what the max limit on this thing is with AIO cooler, just for shits and giggles.

5GHz Pentium anyone? Who wouldn't love that, just for the hell of it.

There already is no reason to buy a FX-6300 when you can pick up a i3-4130 for cheaper. AMD's enthusiast market has been nose diving for the past couple of years, and it's finally being killed off by Intel. Unless AMD has huge price cuts planned or a new core to bring to the market very soon, their enthusiast market is done for.

There's no gaming related reason. There's plenty of true multi-threaded applications that give you plenty of reasons for 2 extra threads and 4 extra cores though.

I call ot bs. I believe it when I see decent benchmarks and proofs from multiple websites. Few tests here and there that contradict don't offer much credibility. I am certain Devil's Canyon is a flop and does not deserve the hoorah it is getting so far. It is an update, that's all. People simply want exciting news. There isn't any. I am going for E3 1230 on Maximus VII Hero. That's right, Xeon. Bored of k skus.
