Moving to AM5, debating on CPU

Budget (including currency): $1200 USD

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming

 

Looking to move from AM4 to AM5. Currently my debate is between the 9800x3D or the 7800x3D.

 

I have a Noctua NH D15 (yes I will get the AM5 bracket for it) but am worried the 9800x3D may still be too much for it.

 

I am running a 4070 Super currently and do not plan to upgrade GPUs with this move.

 

Any insight is appreciated! Image is what I was originally thinking for the AM5 move.

That cooler is more than enough.  @Hinjima uses air on his overclocked 9800X3D.

 

9800X3D is the better bet since you can OC it, but the 7800X3D is a great value with it';s lower price.  It's almost as good.

Get a DDR5-6000 CL30 kit instead.

Not all 9800X3D and 7800X3D can handle DDR5-6400, even if you crank the SoC and DDR voltage.

I would ask first if you actually need a system upgrade at all.  Most games run GPU limited, since most gamers prefer to run at highest settings they can.  It doesn't really matter if your CPU could go to 360 average FPS if your GPU can only output 80. 

 

If you have a non-x3d CPU, why not just get a 5700x3d or 5800x3d and a kit of 32gb 3600mhz DDR4 and save several hundred?  They aren't the best, but they really more than enough CPU for most current titles.  Heck, I've been trying to convince myself to drop mine and buy something in AM5, but the practical performance improvement just isn't there yet.

Don’t buy 6400mhz ram for AM5. The odds you get it running at that speed aren’t in your favour. you are better off getting a 6000mhz cl30 kit.

 

Also, if you’re gonna buy an X870 motherboard you need a good reason. Remember, high end motherboards are about features not performance.

Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

You're fine with a cooler or either CPU if one is on sale or much cheaper get it. As others said better ram and maybe lower chipset board if no need for features.
