3060Ti FE Upgrade - Skip The 5000 Series & Wait?

Go to solution Solved by starsmine,

5070 12 GB just feels like such a weird buy, the 5060 ti 16GB and 5070 ti 16GB fit better to me.
I dont really dog on 12GB, but like I have overflowed it in RE4 at 4K. Im not particularly worried about it being an issue inside the next 2-3 years, but if I keep a GPU for 2 generations it may well be in 4 years for QHD and 4K gaming (you do have a TV, dont you? TVs are 4K. Steam big picture that shit) at the settings the core is more the able to handle.

The 5070 is not in my "do not buy" list, but I dont put it in my "buy" list either like I do with the rest of the 16GB cards in the stack or AMD's options.

in Q4/Q1 there will probably be a 5070 super 18GB.

5070ti 16GB i like alot better, or a AMD 9070 class card, but damn are those expensive.

if you are not unhappy with the 3060ti 8GB performance, as in, your suit of games does not have 8GB problems yet, I would not really worry about it.

Recently joined team Ultrawide and want to beef up my GPU to something more comparable for 3440 with my 5700X3D. I've done pretty much all the research regarding the price to performance for the 5xxx series from NVIDIA, but tbh all the Radeon cards I've seen in white are ugly and although it's not purely performance based, I'd like to finish the all white build for my desires. I'm looking at the Gigabyte Aero 5070 from Newegg specifically:

https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-gv-n5070aero-oc-12gd-geforce-rtx-5070-12gb-graphics-card-triple-fans/p/N82E16814932773

Newegg will give me $200 for my current 3060 - all in all, I'd be getting the 5070 for "less than MSRP" - I've looked on r/hardwareswap and FB Marketplace for highend 4xxx series cards and am finding the same pricing or more, albeit without the opportunity to trade my 3060....just looking for general thoughts on if people think this makes it "worth it" - I don't plan on ever really getting into 4K gaming and RT isn't the end all be all for me, so I'm not sure I really need a 70Ti, 80, or above, at least not until I build PC #2. Debating on whether I should hold out in the used market for a used 4070 Super / Ti, etc. or just take advtange of the trade-in offer from Newegg and put my money towards something brand new. Any and all commentary welcome.

How long do you keep your components for?
If it's a while, I'd probably look at something with 16GB.

If you have the money, buying a computer with the GPU you want on the used market, throwing in your 3060 into it and selling it will net you the best value.

Pretty sure I got my 3060 in 2021, and just upgraded to a 5700X3D beginning of this year from a 3600 (my original CPU) so I'd say at least 4-5 years. The pre-built swap is such a novel idea I'm surprised I've never heard of it before...

16gb is definitely another point for consideration - the Aero 5070 Ti looks like it's back in stock, albeit for $200 more:

You can save tons of money that way. I think I paid a few hundred for my PC, if I'd bought it just from a shop I'd have paid over $3,000.

I will definitely look around and consider, if I can find a prebuilt with the correct version of the card I want...I've reached out to a few people on reddit/FB marketplace with 16 gb 4xxx series cards (70 ti Super/80) to see what they'd be willing to consider, but ideally I'd like a new warranty and what not.

this sentiment is exactly why I've held off for so long - Funny that you mention tvs because I'm about to move and the new setup will accomodate an HDMI from my PC to my new OLED LG tv. Unfortunately, the extra VRAM in the 16gb 5060 Ti doesn't make up for the raw speed increase of even the base 5070. Therefore, I think my best bet is to wait at least for prices to come down on the current 16gb cards or, like you said, wait until there is a round of Supers and make sure to snag one at launch. Thanks for the sage wisdom.
