Hi everyone,

I recently tried replacing my bulky stock charger with a smaller USB-C setup and ran into a weird issue.

My setup:

  • Laptop: ASUS Vivobook S (AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS), running Windows 11 Pro

  • Original charger: 90W barrel plug, no issues when using this

  • New charger: Anker Prime 100W GaN

  • Cables tested:

    1. Baseus Tungsten Gold 240W USB-C (3m)

    2. Baseus 100W USB-C (shorter length)

The problem:
When I plug in the USB-C charger (with either cable), my laptop starts to lag/stutter—especially noticeable in the UI—and the audio glitches badly, whether I use Bluetooth or the built-in speakers. There’s also a coil whine from the laptop when charging via USB-C, which I don’t hear with the original charger.

Swapping the 240W cable for the 100W one slightly reduced the lag, but the audio issues and coil whine remain.

Questions:

  1. Could this be caused by the high-wattage cables? Would using a lower-rated (e.g., 60W) cable help?

  2. Could the issue be with the Anker charger itself?

  3. Is it possible this is a software/driver issue (e.g., power delivery or AMD drivers)?

  4. Has anyone experienced this with similar setups?

Thank you for the help.

Is this on Linux by any chance?

Edit: sorry I can't read

Does this only happen when the laptop is fully charged/at the charge limit? I found that when changing power states, something in my Zephyrus G15 spams I think the I2C? bus and it causes crackles in the audio.

Nope, it happens at every charge state, be it either 5%, 15%, 25% or even 95%. I downloaded G-Helper to see how much my cables and power brick charge and yeah, when I use the 100W cable it just charges with around 5-10W, when I plug in a friend 60W cable and charger it gets to the 60W max. Maybe that's the whole problem. I can't get over the 90W factory charger. I order a 60W cable from UGREEN, I will see about it. Thanks for the help.
