Major Facebook AI moderation bug purged thousands of accounts and groups for no reason - No support for falsely flagged account

Summary

Major Facebook bug were discovered today where multiple FB groups were purged without any reason, or you can have a group reported once, and it will instantly gone. Over 70+ confirmed cases reported by many Indonesian FB userbase, with numbers seemingly growing and includes groups that are even official such as GeForce Community Indonesia, Komunitas AMD Indonesia (AMD Indonesia Community FB group) and some Hoyoverse Indonesia FB group. This isn't exclusive to Indonesia, as other people also reported the same thing on FB subreddit. Even though the info about the incident were initially limited, that when it broke out, the only proof of this incident were Indonesian userbase (by searching with keyword grup hangus or hangus hari ini (purged groups and purged today respectively in Indonesian) and one random person's tweet from India saying that the group they joined were vanished for no reason.

As of late, Facebook/ Meta moderation has been purging various accounts across their platform for no reason, even if it's not related to bots, so this isn't just Facebook, but even Instagram, though Facebook is the most affected. The difference this time is the scale is really large and even more random, that it sparked a change(dot)org petition for FB/ Meta to be responsible for the purge, as FB/ Meta support has been deemed non functional for way too long for all of their social media platform, citing unfair account suspensions with no explanations and vague, inconsistent, and slow appeal process—often taking weeks or even months with no clear resolution, and even more bad support even when the users pay for Meta Verified ($14.99 USD / $21.99 CAD per account monthly) in hopes of receiving better support—only to encounter broken verification systems and unanswered requests. At the time of posting, there's no response from Facebook/ Meta about the situation, and very small amount of group has recovered.

Overview:

Meta’s AI moderation system is disabling thousands of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp accounts without cause. Users are being locked out of their personal memories, messages, and business profiles—often with no explanation, and no functional way to appeal. We're calling on Meta to fix its broken systems and treat its users with respect and fairness.

Why This Is Important:

In recent weeks, there has been a massive increase in the number of users reporting unfair account suspensions. Many of these cases appear to be false flags caused by Meta’s newly implemented AI tools. The appeal process is vague, inconsistent, and slow—often taking weeks or even months with no clear resolution. Meanwhile, users are prompted to pay for Meta Verified ($14.99 USD / $21.99 CAD per account monthly) in hopes of receiving better support—only to encounter broken verification systems and unanswered requests.

Some users have lost access to years of photos, conversations, and critical business tools. Others were victims of hacking, only to find themselves locked out permanently. No phone support exists, appeal links are broken, and automated responses offer no real help.

My thoughts

While this can easily be seen as common FB/ Meta L—to the point where I always joked about 'hey don't trust what Intel AMD and NVIDIA said about their collab with FB/ Meta for their datacenter, their datacenter actually runs on LGA775 Intel Pentium Dual Core with single channel 4GB DDR2 RAM and GT210 or HD5450' because of how shit the system was (and still is to this very second), there's other possibility that:

- It is common FB/ Meta L that are being exploited by report trolls, so their system is just that bugged now, and it's becoming reporting bots/ report swarm trolls field day

- It is FB/ Meta implementing extreme moderation due to recent geopolitical events

Whatever the cause is, it's clear that a complete AI moderation is just not the way, especially with so many news about FB/ Meta slashing actual people from jobdesk that are moderation related, and now they reap what they sow. As someone who used to be a part of FB group of large Indonesia Minecraft community that were purged due to troll reporting in 2019 to the point where it took 3 YEARS for them to recover and grow again, and had an FB account that were disabled in 2018 just for a literal post of Notch stance over Minecraft piracy (and piracy in general) on the same group that they disabled, I can confirm that FB appeal process is utter moronic garbage, that I even had to find their representative HQ which I thought in 2019 they existed, since other companies like Google and Microsoft have their HQ here in Indonesia, only to find out it just never existed. So while this is not new, and not uncommon, it's definitely infuriating.

In some regions, particulary SE Asia, FB userbase is still large, like really large and active, that some community events especially from hardware vendors and PC retail stores in there are sometimes exclusively announced in specific PC building/ Hardware related FB group—also again, basically applies for so many community events of various stuff from Audiophile, gacha games, motorbike community, you name it. And I haven't even touched stuff like FB Marketplace/ FB Marketplace group which, oh by the way, has the most shittiest post system, spam detection and unclear restriction ever (you know, when you have FBMP button available but it just says no lol it's not available for you for no reason even if you can access it before? Yeah, that). So yeah, in conclusion, Facebook really took the L nuke this time.
