mSATA is just regular old SATA on an external port. It was only around for a few years because USB 3.0 gained traction around the same time, and overshadowed eSATA with its versatility and familiarity.
The speed difference will be more noticeable if you're booting off the drive or using it as your games drive than if it's just additional storage.
