RYZEN AI laptop with modular RAM

Its not a ryzen max so yes it still supports sodimms just that theres also laptops with soldered lpddr5x or whatever the hell theyre using for the soldered stuff

Title says all, I'm in the market for a new laptop for myself and found that the Lenovo website claims Part number: 21RX000JUS has support for SODIMM memory which is somewhat odd as this is an AI 9 PRO HX 370 based system, is there a difference between it and the regular AI 9 HX 370 that would result in this being normal or is this possibly an error on Lenovo's end?

Ain't AMD webpage for the two CPUs itself mention both DDR5 & LPDDR5x ?

The article didn't specifically say sodimm, but since it's "user replaceable" and CAMM2 isn't a thing yet....

Those CPUs support both regular DDR5 (so SODIMM is possible), as well as LPDDR5(x) (so soldered or CAMM).

Most offerings go soldered since it's easier, faster and provides lower power consumption.

I wouldn't care a ton about modular RAM if I could get optane somewhere in the system... Give me the fastest soldered stuff out there and then an 800p or 1600x will do the rest (100GB spill over) for everything that isn't an LLM.

I'm not too bothered by soldered-on RAM if it is much faster than regular SODIMM modules and gives me 16GB (bare minimum). Personally I want to upgrade my ThinkPad's RAM.

 

Windows 11 (to me at least) runs like ass on less than 16GB RAM compared to Mac OS Sonoma running on my M1 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM.

AI MAX comes in two tiers.

 

AI385 and above that have quad channel LPDDR5x 8000 that is only soldered

 

AI375 and below that are regular APU with dual channel ram. Of that, there will be manufacturer that will offer soldered ram, and sodimm.

 

Which to use is up to you, but the AI385 is the kind of system that if you don't know you need it, than you don't need it.

 

As for sodimm vs soldered, it's an old debate. Soldered is faster, and can be cheaper, but also it will brick if a module goes bad, and you can't upgrade ram. You need to get the right ram for your workload during configuration.
