RESOLVED - Used 6800 XT fans will not operate resulting in overheating. Out of ideas.

Hi all,

I purchased a used 6800 XT. The fans on it will not run whatsoever. They do not even run briefly when powering on the PC. When running games not surprisingly the GPU overheats and bottlenecks. I have tried the following:

- Removing the GPU from PCIE slot and power connectors and reseating. Same at the PSU end of the cables.

- Uninstalling drivers with DDU and reinstalling via AMD Adrenaline.

- Cranking fan curve to 100% in Afterburner

- Cranking fan curve to 100% in Adrenaline and turning off zero speed fan mode

- Confirmed fans are not obstructed and spin freely when moved.

- Connectors on GPU are in place (at least those I can see).

- Reinstalled old GPU and confirmed it works (it does and the fans are spinning & I can control them in Afterburner).

I could initiate a refund on the card, but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. If anyone has any suggestions for things I should try, please let me know.

Specs below.

OS: Windows 10 10.0.19045 Build 19045

Mobo: MSI B550 Pro A

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600

GPU: AMD Radeon 6800 XT

PSU: Rogstrix 750W

RAM: G. SKill Ripjaws V 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 CL15
Bios Version: American Megatrends International, LLC. A.IO, 13/07/2024

aside from taking apart the gpu to be 100% sure the fans power cable is connected i would initiate a return/refund and if possible film a short video of the issue incase seller doubts you or for proof better safe than sorry when it comes to a return

Just an idea,

I believe Afterburner reports the fan set percentage.

So do you see a set value higher than 0 while your fans aren't turning (while afterburner is set to manage the fans) ?

Or you could just play manually with that ruler by clicking Auto

(It seems you need to hit Apply each time you change something)

Could you try to plug the GPU fans to a mobo header (maybe with a splitter as cables may be too short) ?

Also maybe the fans just aren't properly connected to the GPU fan header

GPU fans have another header than standard fans, they need such a converter.

(It's very unlickely that 2 or 3 fans fail 100% at the same time so it's very lickely the fans would spin.)

Hi all, so I got it working. I installed in the lower PCIe slot and the fans started running. Then when I moved it back up to the higher PCIe slot and the fans ran there as well. That was the 3rd time I installed it in that slot. I'm not sure what changed, but glad that it's working now.
