So Im planning to upgrade to a 14900k and Im in a bit of a bind. I have a 64gb kit of ddr4 3200mhz ram and I dont really want to get rid of them. So I was wondering, is it better to keep my 64gb kit of ddr4 and use that with a 14900k or is it worth it to pair the 14900k with DDR5 ram?

Any toughts on this?

Is this a 14900K you already own?

Do you have a motherboard for it?

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

Bad plan anyway, it's a seppuku prone hotbox chip on a dead platform lol

But you need DDR5 to get best performance from it

if you are gonna get a 14900k, get ddr5, but you shouldn't get a 14900k, the cost of power will make the cost of the ram a non-issue.

You're motherboard reminds me of my Rampage Formula X48 board. It is an awesome board, but it is a DDR2 board at a time when DDR3 was a thing.

I wouldn't do it. Just knowing what it is like having a CPU that will never perform the way it should is sad. Do what you must though..

DDR4 is being discontinued by all the big brands so prices are going to go up (already have) and availability will go down.

regardless of whichever platform you decide to go with, get DDR5.

does what you're doing require the 14900k? if not a AM5 cpu is a better option there easier to cool and you would have a longer upgrade path.

If you have to buy a new motherboard and RAM, then getting a 14900K almost certainly doesn't make sense. At that point, you're upgrading the entire platform anyway. You might as well jump ship to AM5.

The only way the 14900K might make sense is if you can keep your existing platform - that gives it a price-to-performance advantage that other upgrades couldn't compete with, because you only have to buy the CPU. Even in that case, it's dubious, but at least there's something that it's offering.

DDR4 is better in cost to performance.

ddr5 is better cost performance in terms of a completed build

you are talking about 40 extra dollars for >10% performance delta on the final PC.

its not worth it to upgrade to from ddr4, but a new build its better
