Ive been think of upgrading my cpu in my Dell T3500 and was wondering, can I strap a spare "DF1202512SEMN" 120mm fan to the passive heatsink? Its too big for the case width-wise. Im thinking of upgrading to the X5675, and want to make sure I can cool it. I don't really have the money to buy a active cooler for the socket, so makeshift will have to do. Thank you!

I updated the title! 😁

How well is the cooling for you?

the cpu's stay basically OVERLY cool due to passive heatsinks not really needing direct airflow. that being said it was my old rig which i finally retired about 4 years ago but it still works to this day.

Hi,

I got T5500 at home, so X5675 is ideal for that computer. It is turned off right now, as it is my 2nd computer. Though with 24/7 calcs, it rarely gets to more than 70°C. So don't know why you would need extra cooling?!

I also got dual fans in the back of the case, to keep the flow from computer out. & that is powered with the Artic Cooling Fan Hub.

Also, do note that stock cooler in T3500 comes in 2 designs:

  • U shape heatsink, for lower wattages
  • Tower type heatsink, for higher wattages - which is recommended for X5675

Also note that Tower type heatsink is ~90mm, so you would need some fan link 80x80 or 92x92mm in order to fix it to heatsink. & I would rather go with something like NG-A9 PWM, which has wire attachment for fixing on the heatsink. As some plastics (like cheap zip tie) do not like so much heat, especially high heat above 70°C...& I would not like to ruin the heatsink  with that design.

Again, I would suggest none, as there is no need - if everything else works with dual big fans at the front. But it is your choice.

Thank you! I have the U shape heatsink, and as you said, it is ment for lower wattages. I was worried a passive heatsink would not suffice for a 95w CPU. I will look into buying the tower cooler! I should be able to buy a usb fan hub or something and hook 2 fans to it for better general airflow.
