Core 2 Quad upgrade

I have a Core 2 Quad Q9550. Would an AMD Phenom II x4 Black Edition be a worthwhile upgrade or should I wait and save some extra cash to build an I5 system?

additional info: Power supply, hard drive, and video card are only a year old, so I will be reusing those.

According to some Toms Hardware 3D mark, they do about the same. PC mark, the AMD 965 does about 9% better. For reference, an i5 3470 does about 35% better at PC mark and about 16% better at 3D mark.

I would wait for haswell as well. Or wait till haswell drops and try and get a ivy for cheap ;)

Are you currently overclocking your q9550? It's still a very good cpu so I would recommend waiting until Haswell is realeased, maybe even Ivy Bridge-E, until you upgrade. The Phenom is getting kind of old, so there would be no reason to upgrade to it.

Bang on a CPU cooler and OC it to higher performing levels of Awesome.

Give it a new lease on life, in that time that passes at least you can upgrade to Haswell, if its that time of year :) Or something more to your liking.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Save up money, get a Haswell i5, I don't really see why to upgrade to older CPUs anymore.

If you choose to, throw 30-60 down on a good cpu cooler and overclock that sucker your using now.

Yea, if your mobo is at all good at overclocking, bumping those GHz up will make a noticeable difference. Spend like 40-50 bucks on a cooler now that you will be able to use latter on as well if you do jump at Haswell, and its win win.

Every time I read "Wait for Haswell" I picture tons of zombies screaming it on the streets.

You will notice a some improvement, but that would be pretty much wasting your money. You could also buy a nice AMD board, put a Phenom on it and wait for Steamroller for another upgrade, but if not, upgrading to an AMD to later upgrade to Intel is wasting money.
