Windows HDR randomly defaults to 465 nits instead of 1000 nits

Hey everyone,

I’m having an issue with my monitor’s HDR behavior in Windows. I’m using a Gigabyte AORUS FO27Q2 OLED, which supports 1000 nits peak brightness when APL is set to “High.” I’ve already gone through the Windows HDR Calibration tool and saved a profile correctly calibrated for 1000 nits.

However, every now and then, Windows seems to randomly revert to treating my display as if it only has 465 nits peak brightness. This messes up the HDR experience quite a bit. To temporarily fix it, I have to select a different HDR calibration profile and then switch back to the 1000-nit one — then it works fine again… until it doesn't.

Any idea how I can make Windows consistently recognize the 1000-nit capability without randomly defaulting to 465 nits? Is this a known issue with Windows HDR or something specific to OLED displays or this monitor?

I've been running HDR on full time for the past two and a half years with my LG C2. Randomly if I decide to look in the Advanced Display settings it'll say peak brightness of like 3500 nits but after a reboot its fine again. I have it calibrated for 800nits through the Calibration tool. There is a lot of wonkiness at times with Windows and HDR so I haven't much worried about this as when I see these odd numbers the display itself looks fine. I haven't much thought about it beyond it just being an oddity. I doubt we're going to find some specific fix.
