Several G5 and G6 gaming laptop owners in reddit reported that their systems were essentially bricked(including mine) after the windows update last week friday on June 13th, 2025, see the post here. Symptoms are all the same, and everyone updated their Windows 11 OS by pressing either "Update and shut down" or "Update and restart" and the next time they tried to open their laptops, it never booted again.

Laptop specifications:

  • GIGABYTE G5 KF (2023)
  • BIOS Version: FB03
  • OS: Windows 11 Home
  • CPU/GPU: Intel i5-12500H, NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
  • Storage: 512GB Boot SSD + 1TB NV.2 SSD for storage (Both unaffected)

Here are the symptoms:

  • Stuck on GIGABYTE Logo, no spinning dots
  • Stuck on GIGABYTE Logo, sometimes with "Preparing Automatic Repair"
  • Stuck on GIGABYTE Logo, with "Please wait" when pressing F9
  • BIOS is accessible and is able to detect RAM, CPU, and original boot drive prior to being bricked
  • Fans spin to life
  • Laptop gets warm
  • Tried booting from both M.2 slots, same results
  • Tried booting from USB, same results
  • Tried reseating RAM, same results
  • Tried one RAM stick on each slot, same results
  • Tried booting Acronis, initialization starts but no GUI loads
  • Tried updating BIOS, update failed possibly due to being locked from updating through BIOS (BIOS version FB03 retained after the attempt.

Steps I have tried:

  • Reset BIOS to defaults
  • Removed CMOS battery and performed hard reset
  • Reseated and swapped RAM sticks
  • Tried booting to different USB drives and bootable SSD, same results
  • Tried booting to Acronis via USB, initialization starts but no GUI loads
  • Disabled Fast Boot, same results
  • Disabled secure boot and tried to boot on USB, same results
  • Someone reported trying CH413A reprogrammer, said it didn't work for them (Some are still aiming to do this)

People I've consulted:

  • GIGABYTE Retail Technician
  • Electronics Engineer (my uncle)

I RMA'd my unit today even if it's outside of warranty since I need it for school ASAP. I'm hoping to get this issue out there since it seems this issue is pretty widespread to GIGABYTE G5 and G6 users which is indicated in this reddit post. I would also like to know your thoughts in this issue, TYIA!

Final Update: Issue has been resolved. The fix is to re-flash the BIOS from the EFI shell.

Wait a minute

It won't even bootup something else entirerly? Like if you plugin usb stick with some random whatever bootable it won't boot that?

Did the Windows update do something UEFI changes with the bios and messed it up???

And was there an update released June 13th?

I know of the regular monthly update on June 10, and then there was a hotfix at June 11

I've read the reddit post, that's alot of reports

It doesn't boot anything. When the bootloading sequence occurs it somehow just stops and never continues, but it does read the drives and OS. The hardware is also well and alive, it doesn't smell burnt.

Edit: I tried 3 bootable Acronis USBs, 2 Windows 11 USBs, and 1 Windows 10. All of them had the same results — the  GIGABYTE logo.

That's my guess, the windows update pushed a UEFI capsule and somehow corrupted(?) the boot manager/boot loader. It's good to note that my BIOS version was FB03, while the latest is FB10 – so it's pretty outdated. Some people reported to have BIOS versions FB09 and FB05 though.

I think June 10 was the day the update released, I updated mine on a friday since my laptop was on for the whole week due to academics.

Well that's really messed up

You can access the bios right? What happens if you try to update the bios, if you can do that? Maybe a bios update would overwrite whatever the Windows update did?

I don't know what else you could do, or if it'll help or make things worse.

I did try updating the BIOS. I attached an image on the original post showing "update failed" when I attempted to update the BIOS.

I've ran out of options so I just RMA'd it. I was looking to have someone do an external flash with CH341A Programmer but I haven't found anyone who's capable or have the necessary tools for it.

I just hope they don't replace the motherboard, it'll be pricey.

Updating BIOS from EFI Shell fixed it for me.

*Download the right BIOS for your model:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Laptop/G5--2023/support

*Download efi_shell.zip from the attachment:

efi_shell.zip

*Extract everything to the root of any FAT32 flash drive. The partition must be GPT!

The flash drive should look something like this:

image.png.192b6974e1202a6a44a6fd127b94bad5.png

*Secure Boot must be disabled. After that, run the flash drive from the boot menu by pressing F12 at startup

*Once you're booted into the shell, run the commands:
cd
then
FlashMe.nsh

This will update your BIOS to the latest version.

Try at your own risk. I'm not responsible if this makes your situation worse.

It helped me, but that doesn't mean it will work for you. You should know what you're doing.

GL!

UPDATE:

Found a more detailed guide on GitHub:
https://mcendon.github.io/blog/gigabyte-g5-soft-brick-solution/

Also, Gigabyte posted an official guide:
https://mcendon.github.io/gigabyte/BIOS_update_operation_instructions.pdf

Both of these guides do pretty much the same thing.

Thanks! GIGABYTE announced an official fix similar to the links you provided. RMA will be doing that fix for me though.

The root cause for this "soft-bricking" incident is under investigation, once they lock in the very issue, they will push updates to prevent this from happening again in the future.

I don't know who he is, but he seems like he's working for GIGABYTE. He's the first to post the fix on reddit along with a few reddit users affected by this windows update.

Great that there's another way to update bios, so to overwrite whatever part of the bios Microsoft corrupted with their update.

This is just another one of many poorly cooked meals Microsoft has released with Windows 11....
