Current system : AMD 5800X3D, 32GB RAM, 3440x1440 34" screen, Asus 1650S 4GB video card.

So I'm wanting to upgrade my video card so I can play some bit newer games at a better frame rate etc than what the 1650S can give me now.

My budget (can you call it budget anymore when a mid-level card costs as much as an entire system from 10 years ago) is around $650NZD.

From a local supplier, that gets me a AMD 9060XT 8GB or a Arc B850 12GB.

Looking at specs and reviews, the AMD actually out performs the Arc.

I'm use to playing games at lower texture levels/details, so I think 8GB would be fine for me, but have had a LOT of people call me all sorts of names for even considering it. To my knowledge, going to 16GB would primarily assist with higher resolution textures etc, but if Im not running games at Ultra quality etc, would this really matter ?

Someone pointed out its "only" another $90NZD to get the 16GB version, but I'm seriously cringing at even spending the $650, let alone $740. 😞

So figured I'd come here and see what you lot think...... I'll be taking everyones comments on board to have a really good think about it all......

Thanks! 🙂

What an oddly unbalanced system.

The card isn't a 6090XT, so you might want to recheck that. 9060XT maybe?

If you keep your cards for a long time, pay the extra for the 16GB variant, otherwise you'll be replacing it far sooner than you would otherwise.

High-res textures can make a game look much better, even if everything else isn't at the highest settings. It's a visual upgrade that requires basically no additional performance.

It can also make a performance difference in some current titles.

Ops correct, 9060 🙂

Why an unbalanced system ? I already had the 1650S when I got the opportunity to get a new board and CPU for free.  So just working with what I had available at the time.

That's a pretty important thing to disclaim if you got it for free. With the amount of money you'd spend on a 5800X3D purchasing the whole build at once for example you could've gone for a 5600 or something like that instead + a much faster GPU for an overall better experience, maybe an RX 6600 XT or even a 6700. I think that's where the confusion came from.

Keep in mind you are usinf quite a bit extra vram from just running a high resolution monitor. As someone who has seen lack of vram bite people in the ass for well over a decade id say go higher.

That or get an older gen card that performs the same but has more vram.

Since it looks like you like touse your system for a longer time without upgrades id heavily favour the 16gb 9060 or well any other card with similar performance with more vram. Textures make a MASSIVE difference in how games look and are funnily enough one of the lowest performance impact thinhs with the highest visual fidelity upgrade.
