I can't justify spending 90CAD+ on swim trunks design I don't want. I honestly find paying that much money for a chance to get a pattern, to be very similar to videogame lootboxes. I really hope you guys reconsider doing things like this in the future. It might sell, but it really leaves a sour taste in my mouth that I now have to do a dice roll on the merch i'm buying? as someone who loves the simplicity & cuteness of the Breadsaurus design it also just feels like an extra slap in the face that this is the design you chose for this lol.

In conclusion, I don't know it just feels a little wrong?

If you're buying swimwear on the off chance you'll get a different pattern that 99.9999999% of people won't notice or care about regardless, let alone compared to the other one, then I think you have bigger issues. I don't see an issue with a random different pattern chances provided they're explained and if someone is insane enough to buy 10 or 20 pairs of swim trunks in hopes of getting a specific pattern I personally feel that's on that person.

Edit:

Changed my mind after some reflection, I agree this is a poor way to go about this on LTT's side.

I have never bought a product because of other people caring what it looks like, I buy things for me?? I care what they look like & i'm not a fan of them making expensive merch have randomness mechanics thrown in.

I think I agree with @Razercake tbh.

I'd prefer to see the Breadsaurus done as a seperate (very) limited run.

I think I'd even accept a "first x sold" gimic over the "1 in 20", atleast then you have the choice of which you get.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

I'm not saying, or wasn't trying to say, you were buying it for that but in general if you're not buying for the main pattern then people shouldn't buy at all but I can definitely get behind a first X as @will0hlepmentioned

Which is totally fair you should be buying it for the main pattern, this 5% chance merch is really not it for me. Ill just skip this product, but i'm making sure to voice my concern & hoping it doesn't become a trend.

Something about this point doesn't sit too well with me tbh. I can't really word why, but it doesn't.

Either way though, I'll do as Linus always says too and vote with my wallet here and skip this one.

Yah, thinking about it more after stepping away it does kind of seem like a fuzzy area and leaning towards bad if that makes sense.

i presume they *wanted* to do a limited run of beardasaurus pattern, but concluded that the admin/inventory overhead of a limited edition was just not worth the hassle, and this was a way to get some beardasaur pattern out with much less admin/inventory overhead to worry about.

i do think that if they see single users buying large amounts of swim shorts (or repeatedly buying the swim shorts) they should take that as a signal that this is an enabler for gambling behavior, and not do it again.

This isn't the first time they have done this lootbox mechanic with merch. Its slightly better than how they otherwise do it in my opinion, by offering special designs only to paid subscribers. This way is closer to raffle. No purchase nessessary to win. Other than buying the product itself. Everyone has fair chance. On exclusive merch, you must first buy subscription to get into club to buy something exclusive.

Imo spending probably double or triple amount for swimwear with some "better" design already is reaching. I wouldn't pay that much of clothes like that, last swimwear I bough was €15. But I'm also someone who won't buy clothes over €30/pc without trying.

tbh the chance of people gambling is only a small part of why I don't like this promotion. But I can't really word at this time why I don't like it.

See to me, that older way feels less shady. But I also don't like it either.

I think "first x orders" or "all orders in the first x day(s)" or "putting it up as a seperate temporary listing" would be my preferred kinds of promotion.

I agree this is not cool. I bought them because i like both designs, but if they don't listen to feedback and stop with this loot box design, i'll stop buying stuff.

1. People don't get the design they want

2. Whales will buy more than they need

Just ... why?

Link to post

My guess is that they didn't make enough of the breadasaurus variant to justify making it a single listing. I do agree though, that it feels a little annoying to have to gamble to hopefully get the design you want. When they do giveaways (like the "big screwdriver" giveaway) on the store those are fine since it's not so much an alternate product you're trying to get as opposed to just a giveaway entry.

Having one "fully in stock" and another "very limited stock run" for the two options seems like a better alternative to a "1 in 20 chance". Buying a product because you like one and not the other seems strange and personally I think it'd be better if they didn't have the gatcha mechanic.

Keep in mind that I am sometimes wrong, so please correct me if you believe this is the case!

The proper resolution to this is to offer two options: One where they get a 100% chance of getting the original design, and the other option being the current option available

I agree. I'm not a fan of the base design but would definitely buy the breadsaurus ones. They're expensive swimwear in the first place and I'm not going to spend that to only have a 5% chance to get the ones I want. Even if you reverse that and you like the base design there's still a 5% chance you get a design you don't like which in my opinion is unacceptable for something at this price point. Also agree it leaves a bad taste in your mouth because of how much they (rightfully) shit on loot boxes and gacha mechanics in games

I want to share my thoughts as well, because this sale gives me very mixed feelings.

I really like the Breadosaurus design. It’s simple, fun, and honestly just makes me happy. I’d be willing to pay the 80 CAD for that design alone, even though that’s almost double the price of many Nike sport or swim shorts (in €). That says a lot about how much I liked it.

I’m not sure if the extra production steps made it more expensive, but 80 CAD for dual-layer shorts seems like it should be enough to allow a smaller minimum order.

The main design is nice too, but not something I’d buy for that price. I respect the design and the effort behind the product, but it’s just not for me. I liked the dinosaur.

I also have a hard time with the loot box idea. It feels strange to hear messages like “vote with your wallet” and “no gambling,” while offering something that works like a loot box. A 5% chance for the rare item seems like a way to give people hope, even if it’s not very likely. It doesn’t feel right for LTT.

Tl;dr: I didn’t buy anything. I prefer the Breadosaurus design, the main one isn’t worth 80 CAD to me, and I’m using my wallet to say I don’t like the 5% chance model.

  • 2 weeks later...

I dislike the Breadosaurus design. Its not really my style and I hope that there is a way to make sure you actually don't get it when you order, since it would mean that I buy something I don't want.

I also agree that its a weird thing to do. I get that they want to do something unique but changing the design is just not fun.

Also, the recent t-shirt runs have been lacking as well. They sell out very quickly, which means that I often are not able to get the new design. I don't get why they don't order more. Especially when they notice that it sells out quickly.
