Hello Folks, been collecting information and speedometer scores (I feel web browser-based apps and responsiveness is most critical these days) for all the devices I have access to. Let me know your thoughts on this...

My thoughts:

  1. Utterly disappointed with the Galaxy A53
  2. Slightly disappointed with Ryzen 9 7940HS
  3. Intel Performance really jumped 12th Gen onwards
  4. Macbooks are just in a league of their own

I think he is reporting results for the "Speedometer browser benchmark". It tests how well web apps work.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

He/Him - I'm a PhD student working in the fields of reinforcement learning and traffic control. PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). My personal computers include 4 windows (10/11) machines and a TrueNAS server (and I'm looking to move to dual booting Linux Mint on my main machine in future). Aside from computers, I also dabble in modding/homebrew retro consoles, support Southampton FC, and enjoy Scuba Diving and Skiing.

I would test how my machine does (for a laugh) but they are all folding right now.

I didn't even know 18GB RAM existed.

AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600g w/ Radeon Graphics | 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM | 256GB NVME SSD + 2TB HDD | Amazon Basics 2.0 Speakers

Apple reduced the RAM speed for M3 and so had to give more RAM to sort of show that you're getting more for your money than M2.

I think they moved from quad chips to tripple so 6gb×3 was the lowest they could offer that was more than 16gb

Hit 27.5 in Speedometer 3.0 with my Lenovo Legion.

Ryzen 5 7640HS, MS Edge Browser

My iPhone 16e scores between 32-33. Don’t have a lot of cross platform CPU benchmarks, but given how well Apple’s CPUs have translated to laptop and desktop, I’m inclined to believe it’s genuinely faster per-core than Zen 4.

My desktop with i7-4790 (that’s 4th gen) gets about 12-13 pretty consistently in MS Edge.

The i7-1260P I’ve seen with the work laptops behave massively different depending on power settings (for more than I’m used to seeing). Going from barely 10 on power saving settings, to upwards of 24-25 on High Performance. Had actually troubleshooted a couple slow PC complaints attributed to the power settings (used Speedometer to load the CPU, and observe core behavior), which before Alder Lake, would’ve never had such an acute impact.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

@Zodiark1593

Yes Apple really has pulled out something from the bag with even mobile CPUs outperforming laptop chips in Speedometer.

on a side note - run the benchmarks on google chrome. I thought chrome and edge will have negligible difference as they both run on chromium yet I'm seeing a ~30% increase in speedometer score for chrome.
