I broke my socket. Will it still work?

Go to solution Solved by Somerandomtechyboi,

Itll either work as is or you gotta break it off some more till as shown in the last part of this video

Important thing being the mounting pressure going towards the side so as long as you have the bit that provides the leverage it should still just work

Entire point of am4 is to be cheap so if you have to replace the board and you arent gonna go used its probably time to upgrade onto am5

The plastic thing broke.

I have 3 options:

  1. Ofc get a new motherboard.

  2. Try using the CPU while ignoring the missing plastic bit (will it bend my pins?)

  3. Try placing the broken plastic bit, then place the CPU and test.

Please let me know what the best course of action is.

It looks like the CPU retention piece of plastic broke off. That's used to keep the CPU in place. You could get a new motherboard. Putting the CPU in anyway will not damage the pins, but the CPU may not be in tight enough, and you will need to screw the CPU cooler on tightly to ensure proper contact with the motherboard and the CPU. I don't know how you can replace the plastic thing if it's broken, but you can try.

It looks like the piece to hold down the retention arm is still there, somehow. But I can't tell if it's fully intact. If you close the arm without a CPU in there, does it stay down just fine?

The reason that's important is that you need a force holding down the retention arm to get the rest of the plastic for the socket in place. If the arm pops up, it will move the plastic, lifting the CPU off of the pads in the socket.

If the arm can still be held down by what remains, you could theoretically use the socket as it is. It's certainly not ideal, and I don't know that I can really recommend it, but if you're careful, it should work. Probably.

How the heck did you manage to break it?
