Possible 12900KS Counterfit?

Go to solution Solved by jmwhite33,

Looks pretty sketchy to me.

The IHS isn't even on straight. At the very least it looks as if the IHS may have been removed and replaced.

Since humans don't assemble these things I find odd that it is crooked. Even with a blurry pic, Intel should be able to give some feedback.

It's also missing the trademark symbol, "TM"

Hello World!
First time caller, long time listener...

I recently bought a 12900KS from Amazon that was classified as "New". It was not sold by Amazon but by a third party Hyperdealz, LLC. I received a retail box wrapped in plastic. Thinking oh cool they protected the box and I can showcase it because I am a nerd like that. So looking at the sticker it did not look perfect (see pic, also I peeled the opposite side to show the non perfect "just in case"). I open the box to find this raggy looking CPU. I immediately get out a 12900KF to compare and to me nothing looks right. From the size of the R with a circle to the arrow in the bottom left. Love to hear yalls thoughts... I have been too scared to put it into a system to see what it even POSTs as...

PS: I did call Intel and they said they could not verify counterfeit or not... Said my pictures are too blurry but its just how awful the surface of the chip is!!!

If it is a real 12900KS, then it definitely isn't a new one. It looks like it was partly lapped and possibly delidded.

If you don't have the ability to test it immediately, I would just return it. If they lied about it being new, then I wouldn't trust it as being real.

KF is for a customers build so I had it laying around.

Why wouldn't you upgrade from a KF to a KS? Basically I am saying feel free to talk me out of a KS 🙂

Honestly, I never had an Intel CPU box come wrapped in plastic before. This was a 4790K, 9800X and 10980XE. It was always either that sticker on one flap of the box you have or the ID S/N tag over the other flap for the box.

It's still not a great CPU atm, a basic 13900k is better

But it's cheaper...

Looks like someone F'd up a delid/lapping and tried to return it which ended up with you. Here is a real image of a 12900KS. It might even be a fake as the PCB colour seems a bit off to me

according to the above video, that one is fake.

It's missing the matrix code that should be on models have the double square marking. It is also missing the code on the upper left corner of the pcb, not to mention it is completely missing the production or batch code.

UPDATE!!!
I decided I was going to buy another one from the same vendor advertised as new on amazon AND bought a used one from a completely different vendor at a absolutely great price. To compare the new was $399 and the used was $270. Today both arrived 🙂 First comes the "new" 12900KS which I took a video of opening from the Amazon package! I am not going to upload it and waste time but same exact situation! This one seemed worse. Also seems like there's some kind of square discoloration at the top left corner. Also comes to find there is not a serial number on either one! My guess this is a ES. About a hour later as I'm droopy in disappointment rush to the delivered "used" 12900KS. I rip the package tab and I remove the first group of crumbled up packing material and it's staring right at me in the retail package. Down deep in this dark envelope i see the IHS looking right at me thru the retail package plastic window and I can already read the text clear as day vs. the "new" one. I inspect the package more and absolutely NO SIGNS AT ALL of the tamper seal being messed with. I GOT ME A BRAND NEW 12900KS FOR A BARGIN YALL! 😄 I am finally out of this bullshit experience from Amazon other than I now seem my 2x $399 in refunds. Gotta love a happy ending!
