My 5800X ALWAYS runs at 90C under reasonable workloads, no matter what I do... Do I need to RMA something?

Specs:

Mobo: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X

Cooler: Corsair H115i Elite CAPELLIX XT

RAM: TEAMGROUP T-Force XTREEM ARGB 3600MHz CL14

PSU: Corsair SF750

Case: Meshroom S

I've had a Ryzen 7 5800X for a few years now, and always noticed that it runs rather hot whenever I do certain things like gaming. I'm mainly a VR game player, so maybe that's the reason why, but even when I have SteamVR open with nothing else running, my CPU would hit 85-90C pretty much instantly. At idle, my CPU is also rather warm, at around 70C with "normal" settings (everything in BIOS set to Auto, except for D.O.C.P.). Never really paired this CPU with a bad cooler, either. First cooler I had on here was a 240mm AIO, then I swapped it out for a 280mm one.

Looking up this issue, initially I thought it was okay like that because people said that this processor was known to run hot... But I keep seeing various posts online talking about temps being in the 80s at the absolute worst. People say they hit 80-75C, nearly 70C even, while under load with this processor, and I keep seeing it whenever I search for this issue.

Ever since then, I've tried just about everything to remedy this, but nothing seems to make my temps change and work the same.

Over the past 3 years, I've tried:

  • Updating my BIOS (a few times over the years)
  • Resetting my BIOS settings
  • Reinstalling my OS
  • Changed my OS
  • Re-pasting the CPU
  • Re-seating the CPU
  • Undervolting the CPU
  • Changing the computer chassis
  • Changing my water cooler out for a better one
  • Changing my better water cooler out for an air cooler
  • Changing the orientation of my chassis AND the cooler
  • Changing PBO settings to something lower than 145 PPT, 90 TDC, 140 EDC
  • Changing my RAM settings from D.O.C.P. to Auto (3600 MT/s -> 2400 MT/s)
  • Probably some other things that I can't even remember, but also did.

At this point, I'm at my wit's end. I have no idea if this is completely normal, or if my CPU is acting weird, or if all of my coolers malfunctioned.

TL;DR: My 3 year old processor has always hit the TJMax whenever I do most things. I've tried remediating it countless times, but nothing that I do seems to work.

So, a question: Is this normal?

If not, is there ANYTHING that I could try to cool down this thing?

If not, Do I need to RMA something?

As a 5800x owner since launch day, no. With a minor PBO CO undervolt under an EK 360 and a Cinebench R23 multicore load, I peak at 77c. Will creep to around 84c if left in a loop.

As you say "reasonable workloads" that aren't full multicore, you shouldn't be anywhere near the 90's or even the 80's.

First, ensure you know what idle means. Not just you aren't actively running anything, but the actual usage of the chip is at idle so 1-3% usage, max 5% at times.

At true idle, looking over at that machine my 5800x is sitting at 32c at the desktop. 1% load.

What are you using to measure this temperature? HWiNFO's Tctl/Tdie readout?

Given everything you've said, it doesn't make any sense assuming all these coolers you've used have been properly installed with adequate TIM coverage.

That or your ambient is just extremely high.

Its a Meshroom S, there is really only one way to do it. I had my 5800x rig in a Meshlicious, the predecessor to that case under a 280 AIO and it was MUCH cooler running.

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2

Ryzen 7 5800x - XFX RX6600 - Asus STRIX B550i - 32GB DDR4-3200CL14 - Corsair SF750 - Lian Li O11 Mini - EK 360 AIO - Asus PG348Q

I've had a Ryzen 7 5800X for a few years now, and always noticed that it runs rather hot whenever I do certain things like gaming.

If you are gaming, the CPU should probably hit the thermal limit and throttle. If it's idle, it should be hovering between 30 and 50 degrees depending on ambient temperature and cooler.

However if the thermal sensors are not working correctly it might simply be reporting the CPU temperature incorrectly. Like the only I game I play right now that seems to trigger CPU thermals is a UE5 game called Satisfactory.

No other game I play right now, does. If I load a 2D sprite game called called "CoreKeeper" which is written in Godot, it briefly spikes to 74 degrees, and then drops back down to idle temperatures on the menu and then to 60 degrees during gameplay. Baldurs gate 3 peaks the CPU for a few seconds while it loads... the menu. When I load the game itself back up to 75 degrees and peaks for a few moments, and then when it finally gets into the gameplay, it cycles between 68 and 73 degrees.

No game should be 100% pegged at tjmax everywhere. That always indicated an issue. Which would lead me to believe the problem is the cooling system or the mount for the cooler not making enough contact, but that's something you probably don't have the means to check.

Yes should run cooler. Clean your rad. Check mounting bracket for the cooler, make sure its very tight. Use enough thermal paste. Check igors lab or Gamers Nexus for example. I can recommend mx-6 if you want something cheap that lasts long. Make sure that the cooler is very tight.

I set up my case to have my radiator and fans mounted at the top of the case, fans blowing air upwards and through the radiator.

My GPU is a Gigabyte RTX 3070 Ti VISION OC

My room usually gets a lot hotter whenever I'm playing any games on this machine for a long time, even with a fan running. The highest that I've seen is 85F.

I made sure that the cooler was tightly screwed in, but nothing changed. It actually didn't really budge at all when I tried.
Not sure if this helps, but with the CPU in the state that it was in during this post, (Since then, I messed around with voltages, clock speeds and PBO again, but still runs hot while in SteamVR without a game running.) If I were to play anything for long periods of time, my coolant temperature would be near or over 50C

I didn't think about true idle at all when I checked originally, but checking it again now, it gets near and sometimes under 60c.

I used to look at just HWiNFO's Tctl/Tdie temps, but I started looking at its CCD1 Tdie temps instead shortly after this post (and after I changed my BIOS settings again). The readings from the post are from HWiNFO's Tctl/Tdie readout.

Just a thought, because I saw this in the ASUS bios

AFAIK, MCE is an Intel board feature. At least I've not seen it on my B550 STRIX board.

I don't have this exact option, but I have something similarly named...
Regardless, it is disabled. It's also disabled by default.

No, but its because of my case. It's a Mini-ITX case, and I dont have any space for intake fans, but every side of the mesh chassis is very close to the fans for this cooler.

try swapping your exhaust fans to intake, and have the mesh sides be where the hot air leaves
