I have 5x 2TB, 1x 5TB, 1x 4TB, 2x+ 500GB HDD's. Totaling 20+ Terabytes. But there's a problem

I need somewhere to put them. Like now. I am under Enormous space constraints, etc.

The first thing that came to my mind was a JBOD. So, I search eBay, I find a few- but they're all $250+.

Here's everything to consider:

  • I have a very low budget. Like $250 MAX.
  • I can't support a JBOD or anything above 55lbs (24.95kg)
  • The JBOD's depth cannot exceed 20~21 inches.
  • I cannot be a NAS. People keep saying "Oh- get a 19in NAS". Absolutely not.
  • Yes, it needs to be a standard 19in JBOD.
  • It needs to have 8 or more SATA 3.5in HDD slots.

I've been looking at a Netapp one, but I found out it was 25in deep, and weighed 100+ lbs.

I HAVE considered 3D modeling or printing something. But I can't find really anything that seems to fit my needs.

Also I have no experience with modeling or anything so Idk. Also, my 3D printer is broken right now (ugh).

As the kids say "Brooooooo", But actually BROOOO I need help. Anyone out there, please.

You got a bunch of small HDDs : then get a 20TB+ drive or 10TB x2  for $300-$400, you can get at least $100 selling your current drives (can even keep some), problem solved on budget 🙂

Okay, I was thinking about selling them or other stuff. But I have little time, and they may take a while to sell. Also not looking forward to just throwing out $350+...

Would a Node 804 case suit? 10x 3.5" bays. You will need your own mobo/psu to connect to the disks, with additional controller(s) as necessary. I'd ditch the sub-TB HDs personally.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, MSI Ventus 3x OC RTX 5070 Ti, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Alienware AW3225QF (32" 240 Hz OLED)
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 4070 FE, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, iiyama ProLite XU2793QSU-B6 (27" 1440p 100 Hz)
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

No, sorry. It needs to be 19in and rack-mountable, and Doesn't require other hardware. Thank you though.

All server jbods will require other hardware. You need some way to route the data from the jbod to the main server. This will generally be done with a SAS card/expander.

These two links show what is needed to get a DIY jbod up and running.

Okay, sorry, I forgot to mention: I do have a SAS Controller card thingy. And I have a SAS SFF 8088 cable. I just need the JBOD, etc.

Do you have the expander card as well? Your controller will go in the Host PC. You need something to interface the drives to the card in the host machine. Check out the Chirs Bergeron link. His jbod is pretty ideal in my mind.

Yes, I have everything I need. Except for the JBOD.
